The cameras filmed a 67-year-old woman walking down the riverbank steps in Poland's Nowy Dwór Gdański. In her hand is a bag, which she casually throws into the river before walking away. The bag floats away from the bank before sinking into the murky depths.

Desperate cries
Anyone watching may think it's just a case of someone littering. However, chilling sounds soon began emanating from the bag. The distressing sounds soon attracted the attention of some children playing in the nearby park. As the noises increasingly began to sound like the cries of a distressed animal, the children alerted the nearby adults. Instead of just listening to the noise, a woman called Klaudia leaped into action.
As captured by the CCTV footage, Klaudia, who had been at the park with her 4-year-old daughter, quickly removed her dress and jumped into the water. Despite the gloom of the water and the river's tangled vegetation, Klaudia reached the bag.
From cruelty to kindness
As she brought it out of the water onto the river bank, Klaudia opened the bag and discovered that inside were newborn kittens. Also inside the bag was a stone, clearly meant to sink the kittens to the bottom of the river.
Sadly, one of the kittens didn't survive the harrowing ordeal. But the remaining two were given a new chance at life…with Klaudia. Not only did she bravely rescue the kittens, but she also gave them a loving home.

Fortunately, the woman's horrendous act of throwing the kittens in their river didn't go unpunished. The woman responsible, later identified through the CCTV footage, was quickly arrested and charged with extreme animal cruelty. She faces up to five years in prison.
