I adopted Billy, a 4.5-month-old Pomeranian (considered an 'older' puppy) from a breeder three weeks ago, so he is now 5 months old.

At the breeder's, Billy only went to the toilet indoors (he was in a shop unit when I adopted him), so initially, he would only go inside. Now he goes outside and I always reward him with a "yes" and treats, but he still has accidents indoors. For instance, at night he might wee and poo just before I wake up; from what I've seen, he only sleeps for a maximum of 5 hours.

For the first two weeks, I was getting up every two hours during the night. I'm trying to space it out now because I have to work as well and it's hard to keep going. Now I try to wait 4 or 5 hours; sometimes if I wake up in the night I take him out, but I feel like it disrupts his sleep cycle because he might wee outside but then poo inside.

Anyway, I haven't quite figured out his rhythm yet.

Do you have any advice? I try to keep a close eye on him, but I won't be working from home much longer and that worries me. I'm struggling to establish a routine; he goes before I can catch him, and even though he always wees when I take him out, he'll still have a wee inside too. He can't seem to hold it in yet; I suppose that's normal, but I'd love some tips ☺️

To be honest, after only three weeks at yours, Billy has already made some great progress! At just five months old, he just needs a bit more time. On top of the good advice already shared, you could also note down his meal times and when he goes out for a few days, for example. It often helps to spot when he needs a toilet break.

When you go back to work, try to stick to the same routine. And above all, don't lose heart; toilet training comes bit by bit, and every puppy has their own pace ;) ✌️

Hi, I'm a vet student. At 5 months old, Billy is definitely not an "old puppy", and after only three weeks with you, these accidents are still quite normal given his habits at the breeder's.
Keep rewarding him when he goes outside and take him for very regular toilet breaks, especially after every meal, nap, play session and just before bed.
At night, it’s best to temporarily plan a toilet break before the time he usually has an accident, then gradually push it back by 15 to 30 minutes.
Don’t scold him and clean up any accidents with an enzymatic cleaner, as he hasn't yet fully learnt how to hold it in or how to ask to go out.
If he is urinating very frequently, in large amounts, if it seems painful, or if he is drinking a lot, a check-up with the vet will help rule out any urinary or digestive issues.

    Kind regards,

    Romane
