My puppy is biting all the time

Hi everyone,

My family and I adopted a puppy two months ago. He’s four months old now and he’s still biting constantly—if anything, it’s actually getting worse. I think it’s just play biting, but it’s becoming a habit for him and it’s getting more and more painful for us. I don’t really understand why, as we’ve set boundaries and tried to redirect the nipping right from the start.

He has access to the garden during the day and goes for a long walk about three to five times a week. He meets other dogs and people, and we spend time with him in the morning, at lunchtime, and in the evening, as he’s left alone for three to four hours in the morning and the same again in the afternoon. Maybe the fact that he’s on his own a bit too much is making the biting more intense.

I’ve no idea what could be causing this, so I’d really appreciate some advice.

Thanks in advance!

Hello, At this age, mouthing is still very common, especially because of teething. When the nipping becomes painful, the best thing to do is stop the interaction immediately, turn away for a few moments, and then offer a chew toy instead. Punishing them or using your hands as toys tends to encourage this behaviour. If the mouthing intensifies or becomes difficult to manage despite this, don't hesitate to speak to your vet or a dog trainer. Looking at the context often helps identify the cause and tailor the advice. Hang in there; it can be a trying stage, but things usually improve with age and consistent training. Inès

No, the nipping is completely normal, even more so now that his teeth are starting to fall out. Give him something to chew on regularly; dried treats like pizzle sticks are a real favourite for dogs. It'll keep him occupied and soothe his gums (and give you a bit of a break, too!).
