Intestinal spasms in an 8-year-old Chihuahua

Hello,

Shabby, my 8-year-old Chihuahua, has been having occasional intestinal spasms since October 2025. She’s seen the vet and switched diets; she’s now on Hill’s Derm Complete wet food.
In total, she’s had five episodes since October. The bouts usually pass with some medication (my vet prescribed an antispasmodic).
But today was different. When I got up at 10 am, she already wasn’t feeling right; she was walking with a slightly arched back and just sitting there looking very hunched and listless. I took her out thinking she might need to go urgently, as that happens sometimes, and her behaviour was normal on the walk. Poo and urine were both fine.

When we got back I fed them, she ate normally, but then it was back to square one. I took her temperature and it was 39°C. I called my vet, but given the symptoms, they said it wasn't an emergency.
I asked about the antispasmodic and if I should give it as usual, and she said yes.
Despite everything, she’s staying alert, playing a bit, and reacting well.
The temperature is gone now; it went down to 38.5°C and then 37.8°C while she was resting.
At 5 pm, I woke up from a nap, and my Chihuahuas did too, and she started up again. This time I called the out-of-hours vet, but got the same answer as my own vet: just keep an eye on her.
I took her out and she’s acting normally, weed twice.
When we came back for the second meal, she only ate 30g out of her 50g because she’s feeling a bit poorly.
Right now she seems okay-ish and has stopped shivering (because yes, she was shaking at times).

It’s not very warm out (22°C) and it’s between 20 and 21°C in the house, and I’m airing the place out quite a bit because I find it feels a bit muggy regardless.

What do you all think? Has anyone else experienced this?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi there,

The symptoms you’re describing sound like abdominal pain or digestive spasms, especially if the antispasmodic medication is helping with the episodes. The fact that she’s still alert, eating a bit, and that her toilet habits are normal is quite reassuring. A slight fever of 39°C is considered mild for a dog. However, the arched back, lethargy, and shivering definitely indicate that she’s in pain. Since these episodes have been recurring for several months and this one seems different or longer, it would be worth booking in for some further tests with your vet (blood tests, an abdominal ultrasound, etc.) to look for a chronic digestive issue, pancreatitis, or something similar. In the meantime, keep a close eye on her, offer small and frequent meals, make sure she has plenty of water, and contact a vet immediately if you notice any vomiting, diarrhoea, a bloated abdomen, severe lethargy, a total refusal to eat, or if her temperature goes up again.

    Best wishes,

    Romane
