Help!!! My cat is stressed!

I adopted a 3-month-old kitten two days ago and my two-and-a-half-year-old cat is very stressed!!! He's been hissing at us and yowling as soon as we get near him ever since the new arrival! He seems really stressed out... I don't know how to help him. Can plug-in diffusers help him relax?

Thanks everyone

Hi there, you're right, bringing a new cat home can really shake things up for your resident cat, especially after just two days!

Keeping them separate for a bit is definitely good advice. I’d also add that you should really avoid forcing any interaction, even with yourselves. If he’s hissing when you get near him, let him come to you in his own time and try to stick to his usual routine as much as possible... You could also start scent swapping gradually—using a blanket, for example—without actually putting them face-to-face yet.

Quick question: does your adult cat still have access to all his usual spots since the kitten arrived? And is he still eating as normal?

Hang in there, with a bit of patience, things should start to improve :)

Hi there, It’s possible that your cat is struggling to tolerate the new kitten. Ideally, you should separate them for the time being and arrange supervised "meet-and-greets" to help the kitten settle in more smoothly. If possible, each of your cats should also have their own space to rest (a bed each, hiding spots, places up high...), and you should ensure you have two litter trays, separate feeding areas, etc. I think it's better to focus on adapting the environment and the kitten's integration into your home before buying any plug-in diffusers. Best wishes, Laura
