Rescues full, two Akita Inus at risk - Question

I'm posting here because my aunt and our family are getting a bit desperate and we're at our wits' end.

My aunt's neighbour wants to have her two Akita Inus put down simply because she's moving into a flat and doesn't want to keep them anymore.

The problem is that she has hardly ever looked after them. They've always lived outdoors, have barely ever been walked, and haven't been socialised. As a result, they are very wary, have had little human contact, and aren't used to other dogs.

At the moment, it's particularly tough to see them outside all day in the direct sun during this heatwave. It's truly heartbreaking. The rescues and organisations like the RSPCA that we've contacted have replied that as long as they have water and there's no obvious neglect, they can't intervene. It's incredibly frustrating to feel so helpless in this situation.

My aunt has already contacted several animal shelters, but they are all full and can't take them in.

We really want to prevent them from being put to sleep. Does anyone know of a solution?

Unfortunately, the Akita Home rescue has been closed for a while now. You’ll have to try looking for rescues a bit further afield. But is this person actually going to be willing to make the effort to travel to drop them off? Personally, I’d go round all the local vets to flag up this person’s intention to have their dogs put down. That might just scupper their plans.

Hello, Witnessing this kind of situation is heartbreaking and I completely understand your feeling of helplessness. Fortunately, in the UK, a vet has the right to refuse a 'convenience euthanasia' if the animal is healthy and doesn’t pose a risk to others (such as aggression). Unfortunately, most animal shelters are full at the moment, but you could try reaching out to breed-specific rescues. There are a few out there, notably 'Akita Home', and you can contact them through their website or Facebook page. They might be able to help you rehome these two dogs and ensure they have a happy life. I wish you the best of luck and I really admire your dedication. Kind regards, Laure.
