Is it ringworm or something else?

Hi everyone,

I'm posting this today because I'm completely at a loss and I don't know what to do for my dog anymore. I really need your opinions, any similar experiences or advice if you've ever dealt with something like this.

Here is how it has developed:

  • Tuesday morning: I noticed that my 8-month-old pup had a small sore on her muzzle. At the time, I didn't worry too much because, looking at it, it didn't seem like much.

Is it ringworm or something else?

  • The next day: I noticed it starting to spread across the top of her muzzle and onto one of her paws.

Panicking, I immediately booked an appointment with a vet. The outcome of the consultation (which cost £40): she did absolutely nothing except take her temperature. She took a skin scraping, but it was up to me to send it off in the post myself, with a cheque for £40 for the lab plus about £2.50 for stamps. The vet couldn't tell me what it was. She only suggested a ringworm treatment costing £45 "just in case", while admitting that if it wasn't ringworm, the medicine would be useless. Since I can't afford to just throw money down the drain, I refused to buy it blindly. She also told me the lab would take about 15 days to get the results back!

I then called another practice to see if there were any other options. They told me they had a rapid test (results in 30-45 mins), but it's a £40 consultation fee plus £50 for the test, not including any further exams if it's not that, or the price of the treatment if it's positive. It's just financially impossible for me. I can't shell out hundreds of pounds just based on guesswork.

What's worrying me most today: The condition got even worse this morning. I'm terrified that my dog is going to be completely disfigured. I don't know what to think anymore: is it going to scab over and go away on its own, or is it literally eating away at her?

For info, I've checked myself and I don't have any suspicious spots (no signs of catching ringworm for now).

Has anyone else's dog ever had this kind of problem? Does it look like ringworm or something else to you? I'm open to any advice or opinions, because I'm really starting to panic now.

Thanks in advance for your help 🙏

Hi, I understand your concern, especially if the lesions are spreading quickly. Ringworm is a possibility, but there are other potential causes: a skin infection, parasites, an inflammatory reaction, or other skin conditions. In the meantime, avoid applying any creams or products without a vet's advice and limit contact with other animals, as some causes, particularly ringworm, can be contagious. Unfortunately, the fact that you don't have any skin lesions yourself doesn't rule it out. Regarding the costs, you can explain your situation clearly to the vet and ask what the priorities are, whether there's a cheaper diagnostic option, or if it’s possible to pay in instalments. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to get a direct diagnosis without investigating different possibilities first. I really hope your little dog gets better soon. Maëlla
