Tips for installing a cat flap

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for some advice on installing a cat flap in my home. My cats want to go out onto the balcony and I’d like to put a flap in, but I have a few important concerns and would love to hear about your experiences.

The door it would be installed in is uPVC, so I’m particularly worried about the following:

  1. Thermal insulation: It’s vital that it insulates well so that the cold doesn’t get in during the winter and the heat doesn’t escape the house. Since uPVC is an insulator, I'm worried cutting the panel might compromise it if it’s not sealed properly or if I don't pick the right model.

  2. Security system: I need it to have a secure locking system (preferably magnetic, electronic, or with a multi-way manual lock) to make sure the cats can’t get out onto the balcony when I’m not at home for safety reasons.

Does anyone have a cat flap installed in a uPVC door? Which models or brands do you recommend that seal tightly and have a good locking system? Did you do it yourself or did you call in a professional (like a glazier or a joiner)?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help!

    Hi,

I think a microchip cat flap is the best option for both security and insulation.
In any case, I would recommend hiring a professional to ensure a quality installation that is airtight and suited to your door. This will also give you some peace of mind or a guarantee if any issues arise during or after the fitting (which you won't have if you install the cat flap yourself).
Also, please make sure to secure your balcony as much as possible to prevent any falls.

    Best regards,
    Laura
