Hello, I have a 14-year-old cat who has been very aggressive since some pain was identified three weeks ago (X-rays and blood tests). It's arthritis, which was being treated, but I think the pain flared up again last night.

She is an indoor cat and lives in our bedroom. Last night, she attacked us, trying to scratch. She growls and lunges. We can’t even go into the bedroom anymore. She was treated with anti-inflammatories, but we aren’t sure if it’s really just the arthritis.

I’ve noticed she has occasional twitches in her head and body. Could this be pain?

    In my opinion, the change in your cat's behaviour definitely warrants another visit to the vet, especially as she's 14 and has that history of arthritis. A cat that suddenly becomes aggressive might be reacting to persistent pain or another issue that's bothering her.

    The little twitches you've noticed in her head and body should also be mentioned to the vet. If you can manage to film one, it would be really helpful to show them the video.

    In the meantime, I’d leave her be when she growls or seems agitated, and I’d avoid trying to handle her. It’s probably not her being "mean" – she might just be trying to let you know that she isn’t feeling well.

    I hope your vet can find what’s bothering her and, above all, get her some relief. Best of luck to the both of you.
