He's going outside the litter tray

Hello everyone,

For a few months now, 12-year-old Silver has been doing his business next to the litter tray every now and then. He has been treated for arthritis for a long time and had two injections, a month apart, to help regain his mobility (the vet checked him two weeks ago and everything is fine; he weighs 9.3kg, which is about 20.5 lbs). He has gained muscle, takes a Novoflex tablet every morning, and eats dry food mixed with urinary wet food. Before the injections, he was also seeing an osteopath once a month when necessary.

He limps on his front right paw and, despite the osteopathy sessions, nothing has changed. He slipped on the stairs; he is a bit clumsy.

He has a mate called Tigroo, a domestic shorthair he's lived with for 8 years, and they get on brilliantly.

Silver wanders around the garden off-lead as he keeps to his patch, but Tigroo has to be on a lead because he’s a former stray (adopted from a local animal rescue, and the manager there is always available if there's an issue); he has managed to sneak out four times at night. So many cats get run over, and that is the ONLY reason.

They share the same meals. I try to be just as attentive with both of them.

As for the litter, I use an unscented supermarket brand. If I have to change brands because it’s out of stock, he’s a bit reluctant! Thanks for your help.

Hello. Regarding Silver, these occasional accidents outside the litter tray are very likely linked to his arthritis and the pain in his front right paw, which make getting into the tray or finding a comfortable position difficult, despite his regular follow-ups. You could perhaps try providing a low-sided litter tray or one with a wider entrance to reduce the physical strain, and consider a gradual change of litter or adding an extra tray if the issue persists. It would also be sensible to discuss his persistent limp and his clumsy fall with your vet again to adjust his pain management if necessary. Best of luck and have a good day. Léo Mettas. This is not a substitute for medical advice – consult a vet if needed.
