Flying in the cabin with my cat

Hi everyone,

I’m feeling a bit anxious because I’m going to be travelling with my cat in the cabin. The carrier dimensions are 43cm long, 35cm wide and 20cm high... it feels very small and my cat weighs about 11 lbs. Everything is sorted and his paperwork is all done. He’s 13 years old and I’d love some advice on how to make the journey as pleasant as possible for him. I have some Bach flower remedies and Feliway wipes. Do you have any other tips for his comfort? Thanks for your help!

    Hi there, It’s completely normal to feel anxious about flying with a cat, especially at his age. The most important thing is to get him used to the carrier gradually before you go. Leave it out at home with a blanket that has his scent on it and a few treats inside. You can use the products you’ve already planned if you find they help him stay relaxed. Also, consider putting a piece of fabric or an item of clothing that smells of you in the carrier, as this can be very reassuring for him. Avoid trying out any new products or treatments just before the trip. If your cat is particularly anxious or has any health concerns, don’t hesitate to ask your vet for advice before you leave. I hope you have a great trip with your companion. Best wishes, Romane

    Hello Karineb 😊

    I’ve travelled several times with a cat in the cabin, and honestly, the most important thing is to keep a calm and reassuring atmosphere during the journey.
    At 11 lbs, your cat is still a very reasonable weight for cabin travel, even if the carrier seems a bit small at first.

    Bach flower remedies and Feliway wipes can really help a lot 👍

    What I also often recommend:

    • put a small piece of cloth with your scent on it in the carrier;

    • avoid a heavy meal just before you leave;

    • arrive a little early to avoid stress;

    • speak softly to the cat during the journey.

    Many cats settle down once the plane is in motion 😺

    At 13 years old, I’d definitely have a quick check-up with the vet before you leave if you haven't already, just for peace of mind.

    Safe travels to you both ✈️🐾
