Travelling with my cat - is it too soon?

We adopted a one-year-old female cat five weeks ago.

She's settling in really well, and we're gradually getting her used to her carrier with the aim of being able to travel with her easily in the future.

The problem is that we live in a flat in Paris and a heatwave is starting (between 35 and 40 degrees) which is set to last for about 10 days. She really struggled with the heat during the last spell because, despite everything we do to keep the flat cool, it still gets very stuffy...

We have access to a house in another region which might be cooler, so we’d like to take her there by train for 8 days to protect her from the heatwave. My question is: is it too early to take her away with us? If it's to prevent her from suffering in the heat, is it still worth it?

I should add that we are at home with her very often, so I'm wondering if that might help by acting as an anchor for her when she's in a new place.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there, If your cat has already settled into your home well in just five weeks, that's quite encouraging. In your situation, I’d be more worried about several days of intense heat than a temporary change of environment. The fact that you’ll be there with her is very reassuring. Cats are very attached to their territory, but they also take their cues from the people they live with every day. To give things the best chance of success, bring her bed, a few toys, her bowls, her litter tray, and anything else that carries her scent. Also, try to give her a quiet room when she arrives so she can explore the rest of the house at her own pace. If she’s already getting used to her carrier, a trip for a few days seems perfectly doable, especially if it means she’ll be in a cooler environment during this heatwave. Good luck, and do let us know how you get on after the trip! Chatzen 🐾

Hi, I think if she struggled with the heat last time, it’s definitely worth making the trip back home. She’s been settling in well for five weeks now; she’s young but still an adult, and since you’ve already started getting her used to her carrier, having you there will likely be very reassuring for her. I’d recommend stepping up the training a bit in the days leading up to the move. You could try some short car trips around the block with her in the carrier. This will help you get a better idea of her stress levels and how well she copes. Make sure to bring along some familiar things that she finds comforting. It’ll make settling into the new house much easier. Best of luck, Quitterie
