HELP! 11-year-old cat won't eat after having teeth removed.

I took her to the vet last week for a senior check-up as she’s 11 now.
While she was sedated, they had to remove her teeth because of an infection and ongoing gingivitis.
It’s been 9 days since the op. We’ve managed to get the prescribed painkillers into her, more or less in the right doses, though it’s been a massive struggle. The thing worrying us most is that despite all this time passing, she just can't seem to eat. Drinking isn't a problem; she’s back to drinking plenty, and she’s weeing normally as a result. We don’t think she’s in a lot of pain anymore because she’s stopped the grimacing and drooling she was doing for the first few days after the surgery.
She manages a few licks of wet or liquid food, but hardly anything. We can’t work out why she’s rejecting food so much. You can tell she’s hungry because she goes up to her bowls, but she can't manage more than a couple of licks, and we’re getting really concerned now it’s been 10 days since the surgery. I’m hoping for some advice on here, as we really want to avoid taking her back to the vet who operated on her, and they won't give much advice without a consultation. <\/p>

Travelling is so traumatic for her and we want to avoid it at all costs: she gets into such a state that we’re a bit worried about her heart or even neurological damage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. <\/p>

Felix Soups are a real favourite with cats. They smell lovely and there’s plenty of broth and tiny little chunks for the kitties. Kind regards

The team at Scott Aerators hopes your cat feels better soon. A cat refusing to eat after a dental extraction can be worrying, especially at 11 years old. It’s best to contact the vet straight away for advice, particularly if she hasn’t eaten for 24 hours, seems weak, or appears to be in pain. Wishing her a speedy recovery and a quick return to her normal appetite.

    Hi,

If the journey is too traumatic for her, you could try to find a vet who would be willing to do a home visit to examine your pet.

In the meantime, you could try offering her some "liquid" wet food (smooth, with no chunks) to see if she likes it. You can try warming the wet food in the microwave for 5-10 seconds to make it more appetising, or add a bit of salmon oil. Otherwise, try offering her some soft human food like cooked beef mince, cooked courgette or a little cooked rice to see how she reacts.

If she's no longer in pain, you might want to check with your vet about stopping the painkillers. These could potentially be causing nausea, which might be stopping her from eating.

    Good luck,
    Best wishes,
    Laura
