Hi everyone, I'm a dad of three and my wife grew up with dogs. You can probably see where this is going: I'm under a lot of pressure from the family because, as the pragmatic dad, all I can see right now are the downsides. Have any of you been in the same boat? All I can think about are the logistics, the fur, the holidays... I'm sure it'll bring us so much joy, but I just can't bring myself to take the plunge. Can you help me make a decision? I don't want to regret it either way. Thanks, Alexis

    Hi there,

It’s perfectly normal to have these doubts: a dog is a 10 to 15-year commitment, a significant expense, and means planning around holidays and sometimes dealing with expensive vet bills. It requires time every single day, even when you’re exhausted. And with three children, let’s be honest: in many families, it’s often one parent who ends up doing the lion’s share of the work.

But the bond that is built with and around a pet can be truly incredible.

The most important thing before deciding is to have a very clear idea of what to expect by choosing a breed that fits your lifestyle and your expectations.

Pet sitting could be a great way to help you visualise the responsibilities involved before you commit.

    Have a lovely day,

    Maëlla

Make a list of all the responsibilities that come with owning a dog and sit down with your wife to work out some solutions. There are plenty, but you need to plan ahead to avoid any surprises.
