Finding Wet Food For My Cats Homemade

L

I took my cat to the vet because he was having trouble peeing, and they found crystals in his bladder. He is now on a strict prescription diet, but I can’t find the wet version anywhere. I was hoping to make some homemade wet food for him, but I couldn’t find a safe recipe for his condition. Any advice would really help!

    Hi Lucy,

So sorry to hear your boy has been feeling unwell - I hope the diet has been helping and that he's doing okay.

When it comes to homemade wet food, it's really important the recipe is formulated on the advice of your vet/with the support of a feline nutritionist, to ensure it's specifically formulated for your cat's condition. Without this, there's a risk that your cat's homemade food could contain too much phosphorus, magnesium or calcium, or that it could lack taurine or other essential vitamins.

If you're based in the UK, both Hill's Prescription and Royal Canin offer wet food specifically designed to support urinary issues. Your vet should be able to advise you as to which brand/formulation will work best for your cat's diagnosis.

Wishing you both all the best,

    Greta

I tried many homemade recipes, but i think this is the best homemade wet food for cats in the world.
    200g boneless chicken (thigh/breast)
    1 small carrot
2 tablespoons pumpkin 1 tablespoon cooked rice or oatmeal (optional, for fiber)
1 teaspoon olive oil or fish oil (for healthy fats)
    1/4 cup chicken stock

Blend all these stuff and make a coarse paste

That sounds really stressful, I’m sorry you and your cat are dealing with that. My sister’s cat had bladder crystals and she found the peeing issues really worrying too.

From what she was told, it’s best to be really cautious with homemade food for this kind of condition. The mineral balance and urine pH are so important, and prescription diets are specific for a reason. She couldn’t get the wet food at first either, but her vet was able to order it in and also suggested adding extra water to the prescription dry food in the meantime.

I’d definitely check with your vet before making anything at home. Hopefully you’ll be able to get hold of the wet food soon and he starts feeling more comfortable. Good luck.
