Kidney stone surgery

Hi everyone,

My 14-year-old girl was in great shape until a week ago, then suddenly became completely listless overnight.

Of course, I rushed her to the emergency vet, and they diagnosed kidney failure. They treated her with an IV drip for acute kidney failure without any other tests, even though she arrived with a fever of 40°C. I paid around £540.

I brought her home three days later, and not even four hours after getting back, it started again—she was feverish and lethargic. In the middle of the night, I decided to go to a different out-of-hours vet. She’s been hospitalised again on a drip, and they decided to run a lot of very expensive tests.

I’m up to about £810 in fees just for them to tell me that a massive kidney stone is stuck in her left kidney, which is enlarged, and the drip doesn't seem to be helping to shift it. As a result, her ureter is dilated and she’s in a bad way. They’re going to try for another 48 hours to clear it with the drip, but they are pessimistic and have told me we’ll likely have to look at surgery.

So, I’m going to have to pay another astronomical sum for the 48-hour stay plus the cost of a kidney stent procedure, which is around £1,700. I’m being ruined, both financially and emotionally.

I want to save my cat, so if anyone here knows of any other alternative, please, please help me 🙏🏼

Hi there, I’m so sorry to hear what you’re going through. If the stone really is causing a ureteral obstruction with kidney dilation, medical options are unfortunately often limited, and fitting a stent or a ureteral bypass may indeed be necessary to preserve kidney function. The fever and lethargy you’ve described are also worrying and mean she needs urgent care. In this situation, I’d strongly suggest asking the vets looking after your girl for a very clear update on her prognosis, the success rates of the procedure, and any potential alternatives in her specific case. Wishing you and your girl all the best; I truly hope she manages to recover. Best wishes, Romane
