I can't seem to sort out the morning wee issue

Hi everyone, I hope you're all doing well. I posted a few months ago about the house-training struggles I was having with my Border Collie (he’ll be 12 months old on the 26th).

There's been a massive improvement since then as he now does several wees every walk (in my other post, he was only going once per outing) and the accidents in the flat have almost stopped.

I say "almost" because there’s still one morning wee that I can't seem to manage. He often doesn't give us any time to react once we're awake and just goes in the flat.

Does anyone have any tips? His last walk is at about 9pm (I can't do it any later due to work) and he usually goes out for his first walk of the day between 5am and 6am.

For the morning toilet break, have you tried taking him straight out as soon as he wakes up, even before you get yourself ready? You could also leave the lead by the bed to save a few seconds. If possible, give him plenty of praise as soon as he goes outside to reinforce this good habit. In time, he should learn to wait a bit better. Good luck with it all!

    At 12 months old, holding it in from 9 pm until 5 or 6 am can still be a bit of a challenge for some dogs.
    You could try setting an alarm for just before his usual time and taking him straight out, then gradually pushing the time back bit by bit.
    Keep giving him plenty of praise when he goes outside and try not to scold him if he has an accident – he’s likely not doing it on purpose.

    When he was around 12 months old, I stopped giving him water at night for 3 or 4 days, making sure he had a drink just before bedtime. I’d also take him out an hour earlier to give him time to settle into the routine.

    He’s a puppy just coming out of the 'baby' stage (once again... you have to support them through it). Take him out even earlier if necessary.

    Also, since nights can be tough, I used to have him sleep in the bathroom with a nightlight. I did that for a few days as well to see if the behavioural issue persisted. Everyone has their own techniques and it depends on the context (which we can't see from here).
