How long does it take for a dog's coat to grow back?

Hi everyone,

My question is quite simple really. I’ve got a gorgeous little girl who's three and a half; she’s a cross between a Bichon and a Yorkie. I was thinking it might be a good idea to ask the groomer to clip her this summer so she doesn’t get too hot. It’s just a thought at the moment, I haven’t definitely decided to go ahead with it yet, I’m still thinking it over. So, my question is: does their hair grow back quickly? I’ve included a photo to give you an idea of her current coat length. When I went to the groomer's on Wednesday, I arrived 15 minutes early and she was clipping a little Yorkie. I thought it was a bit strange to have a dog clipped in winter, but anyway... For mine, it would be for the summer, but I’m hesitant because I really like her long hair. The groomer always tells me she has a beautiful, shiny, fine coat with a lovely parting down her back that makes it fall to both sides.

So, does anyone know how long it would take for her coat to get back to this length?

I love her long hair but I only want to do it for her sake, so she isn’t too hot. Last year we had a heatwave and I did my best to keep her in a cool spot; I’d dampen her back and head from time to time—more like stroking her with a wet hand—and of course, I changed her water frequently.

Many thanks in advance

Yes @Enigue, when she was born she was completely black with just a tiny beige spot above her eyes. The colour on her legs, tail, tummy and her little beard only appeared later on. I’m going to go and have a look at what a puppy cut is, as I’m not entirely sure what it involves. Thanks for your replies.

Even if she’s shaved, she’ll still have the same habits, like lying on the tiles and so on... have a look online for a 'puppy cut', you’ll find it on the Shih Tzu site.

Okay, cheers for the info, but I’m still in two minds. I see her every year looking for the coolest spots in the house during a heatwave and she always sleeps on the kitchen tiles, so I thought asking the groomer to clip her might do her some good. I just don't want the coat to grow back curly though!

Yeah, it must depend on the dog.

Then again, it might depend on the dog. But in any case, after a month Gucci’s coat had grown a good few centimetres, and then within two months it was back to its original length – and she’s a long-haired dog.

Yes, I saw on a site that it takes between 3 and 5 months. But I’ve looked after a Yorkie before and their coat had grown back in only a month! PS: Lovely dog! :)

Whatever you do, don't get her shaved. Their coat actually acts as an insulator, and if you shave her, the fur might end up growing back all frizzy. What you could go for instead is a puppy cut – it looks really cute. Just definitely don't shave her right down; I've seen far too many Shih Tzus and Bichons like that... it looks awful.
