Does a Staffie need a coat in winter?

Hi there, I’ve got a 6-month-old female Staffie.

I was wondering if it’s necessary to put a coat on her when it’s cold out?

I’ve often heard that Staffies really feel the cold and that you have to be careful.

That said, I don't want her to get too used to being wrapped up, but today for example it’s forecast to be -4°...

And if I do get her something, what should I go for? A fleece-lined windbreaker or a puffer jacket?

Cheers in advance

It wouldn’t even cross my mind to put a coat on a dog, even a short-haired one, unless it was freezing... Mind you, I suppose it comes down to the individual dog’s tolerance. Quite a few dogs really struggle with the cold and get poorly without a coat. Mine can’t even go for a walk if it’s below 10°C without her puffer jacket. If she doesn't wear it, she gets a chill in her tummy and we're dealing with the runs in the house for days. So, thanks but no thanks, she's definitely wearing her coat! Big dogs can need them too; most dogs live indoors these days and aren't always equipped to deal with the cold anymore!

I put a windbreaker on him with a warm lining underneath when it's 5 degrees, and then just the windbreaker for the rain. Pets are just like us really; when it’s cold I think of my own lad in particular – he doesn't really want to go out, which I can totally understand.

This one’s not bad, I’m not sure if they’ll have the size for your dog but it’s quite nice. Just watch out for the sizing though; if yours is muscular with a broad chest like mine, the length might be fine but it’ll be too tight around the neck, or vice versa. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00L46CPV6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

Just as an example, it’s a bit of a tight squeeze around the neck and he’s only 9 months old.

I’ve got two Rotts, and all short-haired dogs need protecting, but you shouldn't let it become an obsession.

Right, I'll look more into the waterproof/fleece-lined category then.

    Thanks for your reply. 🙂

You can definitely put a coat on them, especially when it’s rainy and windy! A wet dog that can’t run about to dry off will get cold. It’s the same when the ground is soaking; they splash through the water and their belly gets freezing. So, above all, the coat needs to be waterproof! It doesn't need to be really thick, just a comfortable fleece lining.
