Does a Staffie need a coat in winter?

Hi there, I’ve got a 6-month-old female Staffie.

I was wondering if it’s necessary to put a coat on her when it’s cold out?

I’ve often heard that Staffies really feel the cold and that you have to be careful.

That said, I don't want her to get too used to being wrapped up, but today for example it’s forecast to be -4°...

And if I do get her something, what should I go for? A fleece-lined windbreaker or a puffer jacket?

Cheers in advance

It's not the cold that's the problem, it's mainly the damp.

People sometimes forget they're just dogs!! Give the puffer jacket to a homeless person freezing to death!! For any owner who cares about their pet's well-being, they aren't "just a dog" — they're a member of the family. Besides, the topic isn't the homeless. Go ahead and give your coats to rough sleepers, do whatever you like. But stop coming here with off-topic comments; dropping that in here is completely pointless for us.

People forget they’re dogs sometimes!! Give that coat to a homeless person freezing on the street instead!!

And besides, try giving a dachshund jacket to a homeless person, I’m sure they’d be thrilled ^^

Haha, that really gave me a laugh, cheers 😁 I was thinking the exact same thing but you beat me to it ^^

I also think it’s a bit daft to dress up a dog, but there’s a massive difference between doing it for your own amusement and doing it for the dog’s welfare. When I see my Staffie shivering instead of playing with his stick just because it’s a bit windy, I know he needs a coat.

And go say that to a homeless person with a dog – they wouldn't even think twice. If they see their pup shivering in the cold, they’d give the dog their own jumper even if they’re freezing themselves. At least, I know I’ve done it.

My dog is a 15-year-old Chihuahua cross, and I’ve been putting a coat on her since she was 9, specifically when it’s damp or the temperature drops below 5°C. In those conditions, if I don’t put her coat on, I’ve noticed that she shivers or just doesn’t enjoy her walk at all. So, I’ve made the choice to prioritise my dog’s well-being over what other people might think. Ideally, you should have a simple waterproof coat and a fleece-lined one. That’s what I have for her. Also, try to find a coat that’s easy to put on—ones with big poppers are the best.

Staffies have very short coats and are quite low to the ground, making them more sensitive to the cold, damp and wind than other breeds. Plus, yours is still young, so I don't think putting a little raincoat or windbreaker on them is silly at all. My neighbour has had a Staffy for a few years now. She lives in a house with a garden and goes out every day to do her business in a nearby field that isn't being used, passing right by my gate. From what I've seen, she really feels the cold. This breed doesn't have much body fat and, with such short hair, they have no natural protection against the cold.

Thanks a lot Sky, that’s really kind! Gabyn, I’m flattered—I never thought Newton would be making an appearance in your dreams! I hope the nightmare with "Ninie 97" is finally over. I really admire the patience some of you have. Personally, I have my limits when it comes to stupidity and nastiness! Love to all and have a lovely day!

It’s that soft little tummy of theirs that’s just irresistible and leads to these sorts of mysteries. 😌

    Happy Birthday, Tibidou! 👏

Same for Newton. A lined raincoat.

I don’t know what happened, but I had a dream about Newton last night! We were going to a restaurant and he took off his coat because it was too hot inside. He actually let me stroke his little tummy! It’s very, very rare that I dream about dogs (or any animals, for that matter)...

    Strange, this whole tummy business.
