STAFFIE X AM STAFF CROSS = PIT BULL?

Hi everyone,

I’ve started doing some research myself, but I haven't been able to get a straight answer.

I'm about to get a puppy that’s a cross between a Staffie and an Am Staff.

Both parents are pedigrees (registered with their respective breed clubs), but they are different breeds.

Will the puppy automatically be considered a Pit Bull type?

Could it be classed as a Staffie? Or even Kennel Club registered?

I really want this pup, but I’m a bit uneasy about the idea of having a dog that might be classified as a 'banned breed' or fall under the Dangerous Dogs Act, just in case I want to travel abroad with him or something like that.

I don’t really know what kind of problems that could cause me... maybe I’m just worrying over nothing?

Thanks in advance for your replies, they’ll really help me make my mind up.

    Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, but I really related to your post.

I was also looking at getting an Am Staff myself, but unfortunately there were just too many restrictions involved (especially the muzzle, I think it's so sad for the dog!).

So I went for a Staffie instead..

Hi everyone, Thank you all for your replies. I don't think I'm going to go for it in the end; I'm not really comfortable with the idea and I think I'll try to find a pedigree Staffy breeder instead. Thanks a lot.

No Skittles. Paperwork alone won't cut it!

If he grows up to be the size of an AmStaff, you could run into trouble with the police, at holiday parks, and even with your landlord or management company if you live in a block of flats.

Any dog that looks like an AmStaff but isn't Kennel Club registered can be reported by anyone.

If he stays small, though, you can get a breed assessment to show he's not a restricted type and then it's sorted.

Hi, The question of who the actual parents are doesn't really matter, as the puppy won't be Kennel Club registered, so we're not talking about a "pedigree breed" as such. It will essentially come down to the vet's discretion when they fill out the dog's paperwork based solely on its physical appearance. Since there's no proof of parentage either way, you can just say the parents are Staffies and there's a good chance the vet will simply label it as a "Staffy". Vets are quite relaxed about how they classify dogs these days, so there isn't a high risk of it being flagged as a banned type, although strictly speaking, by the letter of the law, it would be.

If you’re not comfortable with the idea, it’s best to give it a miss, as there’s no guarantee you’ll avoid it before the age of diagnosis.

A Staffie cross means the dog could be classed as a banned type. However, with a breed assessment, he might avoid it, depending on his physical build. So if you're lucky, he won't be "typed", otherwise life will be full of restrictions for both you and the dog. It’s up to you if you want to take that risk :)
