Severe heart failure

Hello,

I have a small dog who is over thirteen years old. Two years ago, we found out he had a heart murmur, and about a month ago, I noticed that Capucin was losing a lot of energy and coughing. I called the vet, and the diagnosis was that he had fluid on his lungs. We changed his treatment to the following:

Nelio 5mg: 1/2 tablet in the evening
Vetmedin 5mg: 1/2 tablet morning and evening
Spironolactone 100mg: 1/4 tablet in the morning, plus 1/4 in the evening for a fortnight.

His cough has eased, but he still has coughing fits several times a day. Strangely, he can seem full of beans one minute and then completely wiped out the next. He is eating and drinking normally, but his urine has a very, very strong smell. He also has a hormonal issue, so his hindquarters are completely hairless with a few sores that sometimes ooze a bit; however, a blood test didn't reveal anything in particular.

The question I am asking myself is: is it normal for the little lad to still be coughing despite the treatment? Is the vet perhaps just trying too hard to keep him going? Is he still happy and comfortable in himself?

As odd as it sounds, he seems much less bloated since starting the treatment. Could the fluid have spread to the rest of his body?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

For conditions as serious as this, I’m afraid homeopathy won’t do any harm, but it won’t actually improve your dog’s health. You’d be much better off seeing a good cardiologist!

Hi @Dpcc, I saw your post about Kalium Carbonicum. I have a dog who is nearly 11 and has been treated for a heart murmur for several years. Despite her medication (a quarter of a Cardisure tablet morning and night), she still coughs several times a day. I decided to try some Kalium Carbonicum and started the treatment four days ago. I was wondering how long it was before you noticed any improvement? Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, I have a 15-year-old poodle who has been on treatment for two years for a heart condition and fluid on the lungs. He’s taking Cardisure—one tablet a day (half in the morning and half in the evening). For the past two months, he’s been having trouble breathing, so the vet put him on Dimazon 10 (a diuretic): one tablet in the morning and one in the afternoon for five days, then five days off before starting again. Since yesterday, I’ve also been trying Kalium Carbonicum 5ch twice a day, as I’ve seen recommended in some specialist guides. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? I’m not seeing any improvement so far. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I have a little Miniature Pinscher who is 15 and a half years old. He suffers from epilepsy and heart failure and is currently on Crisax, Vetmedin, Libeo and Cardalis. You mentioned using homeopathy for your dog and I’d really like to give it a go. Do you think that with all the meds he’s already taking, I can add some homeopathy as well? Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my miracle. My dog was suffering from heart failure with pulmonary oedema (fluid on the lungs). My dog is a Shepherd/Beauceron cross with a heart condition. He is on Vetmedin, of course (2 capsules morning and night, well away from mealtimes). First of all, I helped him lose about 20 lbs to take the strain off his heart. In a year, he went from 124 lbs (around 8 stone 12 lbs) down to a stable 105 lbs (7 stone 7 lbs). He still eats the same total amount of food—about 2.8 lbs a day of "real" food like pasta, veg, and meat or wet food—but I’ve added courgettes and cut back on the pasta and rice. When his breathing started getting very raspy (which is heartbreaking to listen to when you love your dog), the vet added Cardalis (once in the morning) along with Libeo, a diuretic to prevent pulmonary oedema and help him breathe more easily. We eventually swapped the Libeo for Frusemide (a human diuretic that’s cheaper at the chemist). We started with one tablet twice a day, then 1.5, then 2, 3, or even 3.5, at which point we had to add a potassium supplement. I was constantly juggling the dosage depending on his breathing. Then, a MIRACLE happened: my homeopath told me to give him 5 granules of Kalium Carbonicum 9 CH (from the chemist) twice a day, away from food. Since then, my dog has NO BREATHING PROBLEMS AT ALL. Once a day he might cough or hack a bit like he’s got a frog in his throat, but that’s it. To recap: Vetmedin morning and night (I assume the dosage depends on the size of the dog, so check with your vet); Cardalis in the morning (again, ask your vet for the correct dose); Frusemide (2 in the morning and 2 at 5 pm—remember to take them out for a wee about an hour later); and 5 granules of Kalium twice a day (at around 1-2 pm and again at bedtime). It’s 5 granules regardless of whether it's for a dog or a cat. This won't stop him from passing away one day, but it makes life much easier for him. The results have been extraordinary, and it’s been over two months now. Hang in there and give it a go, you'll see. Not all vets are clued up on homeopathy, but mine took note because the results are what matters; he’s seen the improvement himself and is going to start prescribing it too. Just as a side note, I also give him two organic Hawthorn capsules every day at lunchtime (you can get these at health food shops like Holland & Barrett). Hawthorn supports the heart. My dad told me to start doing that over a year ago. My dog is nearly 14 now! He’s been on treatment for almost 5 years. Hello, I have a question for you about my Pinscher.

Hi everyone, I have a Pinscher with partial epilepsy who is currently on the following: half a Cardalis in the morning, half a 2.5mg Vetmedin morning and night, a quarter of a 40mg Libeo morning and night, and a quarter of Crisax for his epilepsy morning and night. Can I swap the 40mg Libeo for Lisalix? It’s cheaper at the chemist. He’s 15 and a half years old. Also, can I put homeopathy in his water? He has a really bad dry cough, like he’s trying to bring something up but nothing is coming out.

I'm going to do some research online about those herbal pet supplements, but he isn't urinating very much.

Herbal medicine can also help; have a look for herbal pet specialists or similar sites. Have a good evening!

My 12-year-old Shih Tzu has heart problems and pulmonary oedema. He’s currently on Cardalis, Cardisure and Dimazon. He’s doing better but he’s very tired, so I’m thinking about switching to homeopathy. What do you all think?
