Need help – back legs giving way

Evening all,

My 12-year-old Rottie’s back legs are giving way. He’s falling or slipping quite often, especially on the tiles, so I’ve put rugs down around the house to help him get about.

I’ve been to the vet twice in the last fortnight.

The first time, the vet gave him an anti-inflammatory jab and he was doing better the next day. However, a few days later he had a fall and couldn’t move. I took him to the vet who thinks it’s probably a slipped disc. He had another injection which is meant to start working by the third day, but there’s only been a slight improvement.

It breaks my heart to see him like this; he’s lost his spark and has such a sad look in his eyes.

I’ve heard about canine osteopaths—has anyone ever used an osteopath for their dog? Or do you know of any other solutions?

I’d do anything for my dog, even though I know his age is a big factor.

Hi everyone, after trying everything, I had no choice but to have him put to sleep (yesterday at 11:30 am).

He wasn't able to walk at all anymore and had become incontinent; he’d just watch the other dogs running with such a sad look, and he was shaking constantly.

It’s so hard, he’s left such a huge void, I miss him so much... the days feel so long without him.

    Rest in peace, my Trytry.

If it helps at all, my Rottie is only 4 and he’s had hip problems since he was a pup.

He used to whimper when sitting or lying down, but I started giving him Kirkland glucosamine and for nearly 3 years now, he’s been running like never before and doesn't cry anymore. Honestly, it’s saved my dog’s life (or at least extended it). If this can help in any way, I think it would be a good idea.

Hi there, poor thing, it must be so painful for him to be walking less. I’d definitely see a different vet or head straight to the emergency vet.

    @Zanaya thanks for the link

I’m just checking in to give you all an update. The vet has started him on a new treatment and there’s been a bit of an improvement; he’s falling over less and is walking, although he's still struggling quite a bit.

Unfortunately, as things stand, we aren't likely to see much more improvement than this.

We’re going to do everything we can for him and keep him with us for as long as we possibly can.

Thanks for getting back to me.

The vet did some blood tests, and the results are good.

He mentioned a scan as well, but he reckons that because of his age, there's not much point to it.

I'm going to call another vet tomorrow to get a second opinion.

I also forgot to mention that he’s become incontinent over the last few months.

I can’t bear seeing my dog like this anymore, I’m in tears every day. As long as he isn't suffering and can still carry on like this, I won’t consider putting him down.

I just want to keep him by my side for as long as possible.
