Breeding a Pomeranian with a Small/Medium German Spitz

Hi everyone,

I have a female German Spitz who is 29cm at the withers, and she is about to go into her third season. (I was told the second one would have been fine, but I didn't want to take any risks, even though plenty of Spitz owners breed them on their second). The vet has said she's mature enough to have one litter before she gets spayed.

Anyway, about a four-hour drive from me, there is a cream Pomeranian who is 20cm at the withers, and the owner said we could give it a go. I've seen a Pom and a Medium Spitz mate before, even if they had a few struggles... does anyone have any tips to help ensure a successful mating?

Hi there, It seems you don’t really know much about breeding. We keep saying it on this forum, but you can’t just become a breeder overnight. Kikaah has explained the rest to you.

First of all, is she KC registered and has she been officially 'confirmed' for breeding? (The same applies to the stud dog). Most importantly, have you had her knees x-rayed for patellar luxation? And what about other health screenings common for the breed? (Ask for the same from the stud owner) You want to make sure the puppies don't end up with any serious genetic defects. If she isn't KC registered, you'll need to look into getting a breeding licence from your local council if you're planning on selling the puppies for a profit (this has been a legal requirement for a few years now!). Don't forget about the setup either: a whelping box, a heat lamp... As for the mating itself, I don't have much advice other than to stay close by to make sure everything goes smoothly. Don't forget to get an ultrasound scan done. And make sure you have a proper stud contract with the owner of the male to avoid any legal headaches later on.
