My dog bit a field mouse

Hi everyone,

A few minutes ago, my dog bit a field mouse! I've wiped his mouth with a tissue and some water.

I've just called the vet and they asked if Snoopy's vaccinations were up to date! (Yes, they are all up to date.)

She told me to keep an eye on him over the coming days, weeks and months, and also advised me to worm my dog again.

I was wondering if anyone else has ever been in this situation!

I'm worried the field mouse might have had a disease and passed it on to my dog... (It's the first time he's bitten a little critter...)

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Ah, right, they weren't too skittish when you approached them (if you did approach them, of course)?

There were five dogs living together out in the woods, the vineyards, and other spots.

They were what you’d call feral—most likely a litter that had been dumped out in the wild.

Oh, I see, she’s lovely! What do you mean by "in a pack in the wild"?

Nhawak: I know, but I always panic when it comes to my dog. I don’t know why, but even the smallest thing can set me off... In my head, I’m thinking 'He’s nearly 10, he’s getting frail', but it’s silly to think like that because Bichons are actually a very hardy breed! I totally get it, don’t worry ^^ Nhawak: Has she really brought you a seagull and rabbits? What breed is she? That’s her in my profile picture: a 100% crossbreed (shepherd/primitive type). She lived in a pack in the wild before she was caught, which explains the hunting instinct (which was a nightmare to train out of her!) :)

At my boarding school, we used to feed a cat that had settled outside our windows. He used to bring back mice and birds, and one day when they didn't feed him, he ate all the animals he'd caught. It was actually quite gruesome to watch, but he was always in tip-top shape regardless.

Nhawak: has he actually brought you a seagull and rabbits before? What breed is he? Yes, definitely, there’s no need to worry. Kalie brings home loads of mice, rats, field mice, voles... She’s never had any problems!

Anyway, your messages have really put my mind at ease! Thanks again. :)

Whoa there, no need to panic! Dogs are carnivores and hunters, so they’re built for it ;)

Hunting dogs catch all sorts of creatures and they don't get sick from them ^^ Even with my girl, I've lost count of the number of rabbits, seagulls, field mice and whatever else she brought back at the start – some of which were clearly ill – and she’s never had any issues.

My dog chased a mole when she was 3 months old and she’s never had any problems; she’s 3 now and hasn't had any issues at all.

Don't worry, it's in their nature to hunt after all :)
