White discharge after her season...

Hi everyone,

Right, I'm getting a bit worried... Pin-Up’s season started on 30th December (so nearly 4 weeks ago). Up until now, everything seemed pretty standard: bloody discharge in the first week, then it stopped in the second week and her vulva was very swollen (I assume she was in oestrus then), and then the swelling gradually started going down.

However, I’ve just noticed while stroking her this morning that she has some white discharge 😟 Not yellow, green or brown, just white. No real odour to it. Her vulva isn't swollen at all. She’s not urinating more than usual. She isn't licking herself more than normal and, for the moment, she’s full of beans.

I know the risks regarding metritis or pyometra, but I thought those usually cropped up much later after a season (not right as it's finishing) and mostly in older bitches (Pin-Up is only 17 months old).

I’m going to call my vet tomorrow just to put my mind at rest. But in the meantime, does this seem worrying to you or not?

Thanks for your replies.

The Yorkie we had back then developed pyometra during her first season. It mostly happens in older dogs, but technically it can happen at any age. I was only little at the time, so I don't really remember what her symptoms were. Anyway, the vet has diagnosed something else, so I'm just hoping she has a speedy recovery.

Thanks for your reply Leeleebijou 🙂 I’ve just got back from the vet; she managed to squeeze us in quickly this morning just in case. She’s leaning towards vaginitis, given her age and what she found during the exam. The ultrasound didn’t show anything (for now… definitely one to keep an eye on though), and she doesn’t have a temperature. During the physical exam, there was still some whitish, pasty discharge, but nothing else (sorry for the TMI! 🙄). Her vulva is slightly swollen again and this morning I noticed she was licking the area quite a bit and scooting her bum across our rug 🤮😫😅. So, she’s on a course of antibiotics to be taken morning and night for a few days, and I’ll be on high alert in case her symptoms get worse. Fingers crossed it’s just a minor vaginal infection... considering where Pin-Up usually sticks her bum, it wouldn't be that surprising (+ the fact that she’ll go for a dip in just about any body of water) 😅

Yeah, it’s always a worry, but from what I’ve read it mostly affects unspayed females over 5 years old (unless they’ve had a termination, as that causes hormonal changes).

In my case, I suspected Delta was eating a lot of grass at the time (tummy troubles). Because the grass wasn’t digested, it resulted in "zombie poos" hanging from her bum, and she’d start running like a maniac after doing her business to try and shake the poo off...

The vet saw it straight away and pulled strands and strands of grass out of her bum :O during the appointment.

All it takes is for that to touch her lady bits to cause an E. coli infection...

Anyway, your little otter should be fine, just watch out for the long grass too :)

Fingers crossed it’s just a minor vaginal infection... given where Pin-Up usually parks her bum, it wouldn't be much of a surprise (plus the fact she’ll go for a swim just about anywhere) 😅

    Hi balista,

Delta had vaginitis recently; we had to go to the out-of-hours vet on New Year’s Day to rule out a pyometra (which the emergency vet couldn't quite determine...).

The discharge was bloody/brownish with no smell, but her vulva was swollen.

To check if it’s a pyometra, they perform an ultrasound scan to see if there is any pus in the uterus. The medical treatment is quite intensive and involves her being mated during her next season; otherwise, it’s an emergency spay. Pyometra is caused by abnormal hormonal fluctuations.

For vaginitis, it’s just a course of antibiotics and the cause is external—for example, sitting in a filthy puddle.

Make sure you keep a close eye on Pin-up’s temperature until your vet appointment.

    Best wishes

Oh yeah, definitely, I’ll just wait for things to get worse before seeing a vet... especially given the risks of a uterine infection 😰

I'm always the type to worry about nothing, so I'd say you're definitely doing the right thing by getting in touch with the vet on Monday morning. ^^
