Still whining more than 24 hours after being spayed

Hi everyone. I had my girl spayed two days ago. When we got home, she was whining a bit, which I know is normal after an op while they’re still coming round from the anaesthetic... but it’s still going on. She’s managing to sleep and seems her usual self otherwise, apart from all this crying 😩😔 at times she just carries on and we can't settle her at all, I don't understand it. I took her back to the vet the day after the operation; they checked her over and gave her another morphine jab, but she started up again that same evening. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of reaction? Thanks in advance for your replies.

To be honest, I don't think the anaesthetic was too heavy.

No, she isn't wearing a cone. The vet told me that these days they don't really use dressings and cones anymore; instead, they put them in a sort of fabric suit, like a little pair of pyjamas, that covers the dog from their back down to the wound with a bandage to keep it all in place. It’s specifically so they don't have to wear a cone. Actually, I noticed she hardly did it at all this afternoon, but she's started doing it again this evening... honestly, it really reminds me of some kind of anxiety attack...? But it's so strange that she's reacting like this right after the anaesthetic! I wonder if the anaesthetic was too "heavy"—I don't know if it's possible for the drugs to cause neurological issues...?🥺

    Hi there,

There's one thing you haven't mentioned: the cone! 😁

If she’s wearing one, that could well be the reason she's feeling a bit "sorry for herself"...

Otherwise, it could just be her scar pulling a bit; she might be feeling some discomfort without being in any real pain.

As long as the vet isn't concerned, she’s eating and drinking, and she’s complaining less, I wouldn't worry too much, though do keep a close eye on her. 😊

Actually, I did get some meds for her as well.

But she isn’t in any pain; I think it’s more of a psychological thing.

She’s doing it less now, so I reckon she’ll be feeling even better by tomorrow.

It’s best to avoid walks for now and wait at least a week. It takes time after an operation, and it depends on their age too. I had three of mine neutered at the same time as another op. Give it at least 48 hours anyway. It still takes a bit of time to recover, mind you. The vet gave me some meds for four or five days – didn't yours?

To be honest, no, but as I've got males, they've never had to have an operation like that... Maybe try distracting her with some walks on the lead or a bit of scatter feeding with some dry food in the grass.
