Small red lump on my dog?

Hi everyone,

I've just found a small red lump on my 13-year-old dog's side.

At first, I thought it might be a tick, but the lump is bright red/pink and I can't see a "head".

I check my dog every day and it definitely wasn't there yesterday... It doesn't seem to be bothering him or causing him any pain...

I'll give my vet a ring tomorrow but, in the meantime, does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Thanks for your help

Hi, my 4-year-old dog had the same lump on the inside tip of his ear. I applied some yellow Betadine (Povidone-iodine 10% solution) twice; it dried up and fell off.

Yeah, it’s always best to get the vet to have a look.

And definitely keep an eye on it to see if it gets any bigger... The fact it appeared overnight doesn't worry me too much, especially for something as small as those skin tags my dog used to have. They’d grow all of a sudden and then never change again.

In any case, you should always keep monitoring any "lumps and bumps" that pop up here and there. I’m still keeping an eye on a skin tag my other dog has to make sure it doesn't change, along with two fatty lumps he’s had for a few years (the vet checked them out and said they were fine), but I still check them frequently...

Mind you, it doesn't really look like a cyst to me. But then again, I don't know everything! ^^

Thank you so much for your reply, I also thought it might be a growth, but would it pop up that quickly??? My dog has a small one near his armpit, but it's skin-coloured too... He was neutered less than a year ago because he had a testicular tumour; the vet advised me to check regularly for any cysts appearing, but I didn't think it would look like this... Thanks for your advice anyway, I'll send a photo to my vet tomorrow and they'll let me know if I need to take him in.

My old girl used to get "growths" (that’s what the vet called them). They were sort of like little skin tags that popped up here and there as she got older. The vet wasn't worried at all. My current five-year-old dog has one on his flank too.

The shape of the one in your photo looks identical. But the colour... with mine, they were skin-coloured. Not a bright red or pink like that. That colour worries me a bit.

My mum’s dog used to have tumours—benign ones, nothing serious, but they’d grow and get huge. He had a "growth" like the others, but it was a bit odd. Unlike the ones I described before, this one just kept growing and growing until it looked like a massive testicle hanging by a tiny bit of skin. Even though he didn't seem bothered, it must have been painful considering the weight being held by such a small piece of skin. We had it removed.

We'll have to see what the vet thinks. But keep an eye on it if it gets bigger (even if the vet says it’s nothing to worry about). I’d suggest getting it removed while it’s still small, as the anaesthesia won't be such a big deal for an ageing dog. I think the vet said that when it was still small, he could have even removed it without a general anaesthetic if the dog was very well-behaved (which my mum’s dog definitely wasn't). Because later on, even though it wasn't malignant, it grew so much that the weight of it hanging there really hurt him... (It was like a very heavy, overripe pear).

If it doesn't change, like with my other dogs... (though the colour does concern me) then there's no issue...

Mind you, that's just my experience. Only a vet will be able to tell you for sure what it is.
