Help! My dog has eaten caramel popcorn

Hi everyone,

I was making some toffee popcorn to watch a series on Netflix.

I stepped away for a few minutes and when I came back, I found my dog up on the coffee table.

She’s eaten a good dozen pieces of the sweet popcorn. My Shiba Inu puppy is 6 months old and weighs about 13 and a half lbs.

She seems fine at the moment (no vomiting, pain, bloating, weird stools or anything more serious).

I’ve had a dog before who snuck some Christmas chocolates, but he weighed about 55-65 lbs, and now that Hope has eaten something so sugary, I'm worried she'll get food poisoning.

Until people realised it causes diabetes and the blindness that often goes with it, pub landlords' dogs ate far too much sugar every single day of their lives. I'd be very surprised if a bit of popcorn had any impact on his health. Mind you, as for you... if it becomes a habit... 😁
You’re right, a few pieces of popcorn definitely won't leave you with a four-legged Stevie Wonder.

I don't see what the issue is; when I'm watching a film I crack open a cold one, and I don't see why my dog shouldn't be allowed one too 😆
I had a few seasons/series to catch up on (Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why and Locke and Key).

Cheers, I was mainly worried because of the caramel; I didn't know if sugar was toxic in the same way chocolate is 😌

Alright, thanks for your replies, so there's no need to worry then.

PS: Yes Del, thank goodness my dog is there to keep me active 😌

10 pieces of popcorn? Nothing to worry about! As @Kikaah said, chocolate can be lethal above a certain dose (depending on the dog’s weight), but sugar—especially just as a one-off like that—won't kill your pooch! Try to relax, you seem a bit stressed with your pup, don't you? 😉

No need to panic, just keep an eye on their behaviour and appetite. Sugar isn't toxic like chocolate is (and even then, it depends on several factors), but of course you should give them as little as possible—ideally none at all—as it's not good for them in the long run.
