Puppy peeing 20 times a day

Hi everyone,

We brought a little Jack Russell puppy into our family about 2 weeks ago.

He is 2 months and 3 weeks old.

This is the first time I've ever had a dog, so I don't know if this is normal, though I suspect there might be a problem.

During the day, he's peeing about twenty times, if not more! He goes every 15 to 20 minutes unless he's asleep. At night, however, I don't have that issue; he only goes once to three times at most.

Has anyone else dealt with this kind of thing before?

Thanks in advance.

Your little Jack might have something wrong with him. Have you seen a vet yet? Please don't say you're going to give him up... You know, my Jack is 12 now and he still has the odd accident in the house; as he gets older, it’ll probably happen even more often. But besides that, he’s absolutely brilliant... He’s so cuddly, he cracks me up with his antics, he’s like my shadow, and he even shares my bed! Speak to your vet first... then there are other options, like seeing a behaviourist. Keep us posted, but please don’t give up on him...

My dog is 10 months old now and she’s still not house-trained. She’s had about 10 accidents in the house even though I take her out regularly... she even peed on the bed recently... I’m at my wits' end. I’ve had her since September and I’ve tried everything but nothing is working... I’m this close to rehoming her.

Oh absolutely, you should definitely get rid of her. It’s just like kids who aren't potty trained by the time they start nursery – we should probably just give them all away, or worse.

How did you go about house training them? How old were they when you adopted them? What breed?

Hi Juline, I’ve got an 11-year-old Jack Russell and he had the exact same behaviour as yours when he was a puppy. As for the furniture, he stopped of his own accord once he got used to me being out (luckily he only ever went for one chest of drawers), but I have to admit the toilet training took a long time. In fact, he still has the odd ‘accident’ every now and then, usually when he’s a bit miffed about something! But I can’t always take him with me... Do let us know what your vet diagnosed...

    No, he’s not KC registered.

Thanks for the advice, I’ll give it a go tonight.

"He understands 'no' perfectly well; at the moment, I'm not having any issues, other than him chewing the furniture a bit when we're out..."

To me... that is an issue... put some pepper on the furniture... he won't go near it then.

When you get a new pet, you should always go to the vet to see if everything the breeder told you checks out...

    Is your dog KC registered?

Thanks for all your replies! I’ve booked an appointment with the vet for Saturday anyway; it’ll give me some peace of mind to know everything is okay!

Yes, he’s very high-energy! He’s absolutely tireless!!! On the plus side, he’s very easy to train—after just four days, he’d already picked up ‘sit’, both the verbal command and the hand signal! He understands ‘no’ perfectly well, and I’m not having any issues at the moment, other than him chewing the furniture a bit when we’re out...

That's not too young. In Belgium, it’s actually legal from 7 weeks old. It’s perfectly normal for him to go to the toilet so often.

The standard age for rehoming a puppy is eight weeks...

For a kitten, it’s twelve weeks...

And it’s exactly at eight weeks that a puppy is at the best age for socialisation—getting them used to other dogs, meeting people out on the street, and experiencing all sorts of different noises.

It’s perfectly normal that he’s peeing so much... he just can't hold it in yet...

Get him out and about, let him meet all kinds of dogs of every shape and size...

Jack Russells are very high energy... if this is your first dog, just be aware that the breed has a real mind of its own.

I look after a few Jacks myself... you definitely need to use an iron fist in a velvet glove with them.
