Odd behaviour with her cuddly toy

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand why Fiona is "acting" this way with her cuddly toy. She got a new plushie a few days ago, and she's behaving quite strangely with it.

She hasn't shredded it (which is very rare for her), and she's taking great care of it.

She hides it at the back of her crate and sits on top of it so no one can take it. She also dives under the duvets with it in her mouth, and if we're unlucky enough to take it from her, she jumps up and whines until we give it back.

In the end, we don't actually play with her using this toy because I feel like it's driving her a bit mad.

Then she'll pick it up in her mouth, wander all over the house with it, and look for THE perfect spot to hide it and herself away.

If she can't find the right spot, she whines and paces around in circles.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

My previous rabbit had a phantom pregnancy and developed mammary cysts. Unfortunately, despite all the vet bills, it wasn't enough to save her. But I want to reassure you, @Tshika, it doesn't usually get that serious with dogs!

How long ago was she in season? You usually count between two and two and a half months after a season for a potential phantom pregnancy.

I've seen this before! It looks very similar. Give your vet a ring, as it might mean having to postpone the procedure.

Yes, that's what I was going to say, watch out for a phantom pregnancy!

No, she hasn't been spayed yet; her op is this Friday.

I'll ask the vet about it on Friday and see what they say.

If she's hiding it under the duvet, it's true that people usually say it's like a 'prey' instinct (like burying a bone in the garden). That said, I actually think she probably sees it as her baby because she looks so relaxed with it (even when you're taking a photo). Anyway, it's not that strange, so don't worry. The same thing happened with my previous dog, and I can tell you that if she usually shreds her soft toys, she'll end up doing it to this one too XD.

What’s Fiona up to then? Is she spayed? If not, could it be a phantom pregnancy? Check to see if her milk has come in. Love, Tshika

She’s four years old, and I don’t know if she’s had a litter before. I can’t quite tell if she’s treating it like her "baby" or if she sees it as prey.

She’s probably just seeing it as a baby that needs protecting. Just leave her to it, she’ll grow out of it.

    Hi there!!

    How old is she?

I know my old dog used to do that too; the vet told me that even though she’d never had a litter, it was possible she was treating it like her baby.

Mind you, it only lasted for a while—after a bit, she ended up shredding it anyway! ^^
