Odd behaviour with her cuddly toy

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand why Fiona is "acting" this way with her cuddly toy. She got a new plushie a few days ago, and she's behaving quite strangely with it.

She hasn't shredded it (which is very rare for her), and she's taking great care of it.

She hides it at the back of her crate and sits on top of it so no one can take it. She also dives under the duvets with it in her mouth, and if we're unlucky enough to take it from her, she jumps up and whines until we give it back.

In the end, we don't actually play with her using this toy because I feel like it's driving her a bit mad.

Then she'll pick it up in her mouth, wander all over the house with it, and look for THE perfect spot to hide it and herself away.

If she can't find the right spot, she whines and paces around in circles.

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

    Hi everyone,

We have a 10-year-old Yorkie and for the past three days she’s been acting really strangely with a soft toy (one she usually shreds to bits). She whines whenever she hasn’t got it, hides away with it, and isn't eating much... we’re really worried. Our vet won't be available for another week.
From what I can gather, it sounds like a phantom pregnancy, right?

Mine’s been doing that since she was a tiny puppy. She’s been spayed and she’s 12 now. She’s a Frenchie, so I just let her get on with it and don’t bother her.

Hi, my Jack Russell does the same thing, but he’s a male. Could you explain why?

Mercotte, how old is your boy? Perhaps he just needs some comfort that reminds him of his mum or his littermates? Have you had him for long?

Mine’s a boy and he has a little rug that he scrunches up and carries in his mouth. He sleeps with it or just stares at you with it; he’s so cute! Why does he do that? Maybe it’s his comfort blanket?

Don't worry, you're just feeling a bit all over the place at the moment...

Is that really true? Blimey, he was right! And there was me telling him "no way, it's just not possible...", I look a bit of a fool now! Thanks Tania ;)

Yes, our breeder told us not to get any squeaky toys as well!

Samsam is acting as if she’s having puppies, so she’s taking her soft toys and other things to be her babies. Her milk is coming in and it needs to be treated, otherwise it could lead to complications.

What exactly is a phantom pregnancy?

She’s doing better now, yeah :) But you know, it might sound a bit strange, but she’s got another soft toy that squeaks as well. And basically, the second we make it squeak, she just stops what she’s doing and becomes really gentle with it. My boyfriend told me to stop making it squeak, as he thinks she reckons it’s a puppy crying. Do you think that’s possible? 🤪
