My 6-month-old puppy still isn't house-trained

Hi everyone, I've got a 6-month-old male Jack Russell and even though time is moving on, he's still not house-trained. He goes out at least three times a day and I have a little garden where he does his business when he's outside; however, when he's in the house with us, he still goes inside.

At night, he sleeps in a crate (as he gets into too much mischief otherwise) but he even poos in there. What I don't understand is that I've read that dogs have defined areas for sleeping, so why on earth is he pooing in his own bed?

To try and house-train him, I've tried telling him off when he wees or poos in the house, saying "no, that's bad!". When he goes outside, I make a massive fuss of him so he knows it's a good thing, but it hasn't changed anything. I've even tried rubbing his nose in it and scolding him, but he still doesn't get it. I'm at my wits' end.

"Oh drat... But why was it bumped? Bother! Thanks Sky." "It was Vénus17 who bumped the thread; I don't think she noticed the date. Mind you, I've got nothing against Sky, but *I* was the one who told you, you cheeky thing! 🤧😞 😁😝 Hi Nix, Vénus 17, someone got there before you, even though it's the sort of thing that could easily happen to me too. Some topics stay interesting anyway, as these cases are never one-offs. Have a lovely day, everyone.

Argh, double drat! I’m really not with it tonight!

Sorry for the mistake, titejava 😅

I’m heading off to bed before I get anything else muddled up. It seems to be happening a lot lately 😡

    Night night, titejava 🙂

Six months... My mum’s dog wasn’t fully house-trained until she was seven months old. Dingo (my male) was about eight or nine months. And as for my little gun dog... I won’t even go there! 😂 At six months, he’s still well within the normal timeframe. Don’t lose heart, and try not to get cross with the little lad. It’s just like when he was tiny; he’s just staying a puppy for a bit longer... Personally, I’ve never had a puppy house-trained by three or four months 😅 to me, six months is still very much a baby.

I don't know many dogs who go on command...

Hi there, I’m lucky enough to have a dog who goes on command, and it’s not the first one I've had either.

Wtigger7 - What are you using to clean up the accidents indoors? Whatever you do, don't use bleach; you need to use water mixed with white vinegar. Their little noses tell them whether a spot is "right" or not, and dogs generally don't find the smell of their own pee unpleasant. As for the poo, make sure you clear it up without the puppy seeing you do it.

    Hi there!

To get your dog house-trained—and please don't take this the wrong way—what worked wonders for us was buying a crate (about 3ft by 2ft 4in).

We put our female Frenchie in it from 10 pm to 7 am for a month and that was that. Problem solved.

Just make sure you make it really cosy for them with their bed and some toys; it needs to be a crate where the dog still has plenty of room. Don't look at it as a punishment—it's better to do this for a month and keep them for life than having to rehome them.

Good luck, you can thank me later! 😉
