He's mounting her but they aren't tying

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some advice. My ***** has been with the male for four days now. For the first two days, nothing happened as she wouldn't let him mount her at all. On the 3rd and 4th days, she's been standing for him, but he only stays on her for about 30 seconds before getting off. (This was her 12th and 13th day of her season). Do I need to wait a bit longer for them to tie, or is it already too late for the mating? Thanks.

Misanthrope has already answered your main question for the most part...

Dogs don't always "tie" during mating; if the female doesn't have the right contractions when the male penetrates, they won't always lock together. That doesn't mean she won't end up pregnant, though.

Secondly, once a female starts rejecting a male, it usually means the "window" has passed...

Just something else to consider—have you really thought through the consequences? One quick mount, two months of pregnancy, and then at least three months with a whole litter that you'll have to take full responsibility for on all fronts... Not to mention potential complications during the pregnancy, the whelping itself, and socialising the puppies...

It’s expensive and requires a massive commitment.

All the best with the mum-to-be. Don't hesitate to post again if you need to, but keep in mind that your best ally is always your vet!

Just because she didn't 'tie' doesn't mean she isn't pregnant! You can get an ultrasound scan from 21 days of pregnancy onwards. To be on the safe side, you could try putting them together again in 2 and 4 days' time. A dog's ovulation period is just like ours – it's not an exact science!

It’s definitely better to do your research properly beforehand rather than leaving it until now. You’ll need to get an ultrasound scan to see if she’s actually caught and to find out how many puppies there are, though I’m not sure at what stage you can do that. Are you also aware that it’s mandatory to have a breeding licence if you want to breed your dog? I believe you have to sort that out through your local council...
