Dog barking when I'm out and angry neighbours

Hi everyone!

I'm sure this has been covered before, but every situation is different, so I'm putting out a bit of an SOS.

I've just moved into a flat and I have a 5-year-old female Jack Russell.

The problem is she barks whenever I'm out, and apparently it's non-stop; my neighbours are at their wits' end... I'm worried there will be consequences if something doesn't change. She barks when she hears noise in the stairwell, or sometimes for no reason at all (according to them).

I really need this to stop because even when I'm at home and she hears a noise she barks, and it's becoming unbearable for me too, especially at 4am!...

If anyone can help, I'd be so grateful.

Thanks in advance,

Ophélie

Right, to start with, could you describe a typical day for her? How often and for how long is she taken out, and what is she supposed to be doing with herself all day? It's important to make sure she has enough to keep her busy and that she’s getting enough exercise so that barking doesn’t become a full-time job... There are so many reasons why a dog might bark and, given the situation, I’d recommend getting in touch with a dog behaviourist who can come to your home to help you sort this out. In the meantime, regarding the barking at noises in the stairwell, you could try to set up these sounds (with the help of a friend) – or just keep a close eye on her – and watch your dog. As soon as you see her tensing up because of a noise, before she actually barks, act really excited, give her some really tasty treats, and surprise her with loads of praise. This will stop her from barking and teach her to stay quiet when she hears those sounds (since being quiet is more rewarding). (If she does bark, just change rooms; she should be tempted to follow you and she'll "snap out of it" more quickly). It’ll take a bit of time, but I managed to teach my dog to stay quiet when I'm around for those kinds of noises... It won't solve everything, but it would be a good bit of progress. Personally, I would never use fear or pain to train my dog...

My dog used to bark as well... I borrowed my mum's bark collar (set it to vibrate mode, not the electric shock one, even though it has the option – I didn't want to drive my dog mad) and I turned it up until it gave him a bit of a start, and like magic, the barking stopped!! You can get them for really good prices; my mum paid about £35 for mine, so definitely have a look while the sales are on!! It’s the price of success ^^
