Hi everyone,

What are Beagle cross Jack Russells like? I think they look absolutely adorable, but what are they actually like in terms of temperament and affection?

I imagine they must be very high-energy dogs, right? Since both Beagles and Jack Russells are known for being so active.

Please share your advice and experiences! If you're torn between two breeds—in this case, the Beagle and the Jack Russell—do you think it's a good idea to go for a crossbreed of the two?

P.S. My best mate is thinking about adopting a Dalmatian. Could you tell me a bit about the breed's characteristics, such as how affectionate they are, their general behaviour, and their activity levels? Also, are they good with children? His partner is pregnant, so he wants to be sure.

Thanks so much for your help!

This will be an incredibly high-stamina and active dog that will never really settle; he'll always be "on," with a high prey drive, but very friendly and with a real mind of his own... roughly speaking, that’s what you should expect. Beagles are still used as working hounds and Jack Russells are like little nuclear power stations—constantly on the move. If his needs aren't met, he’ll become neurotic and develop behavioural issues, such as aggression or destructiveness. From the Beagle side, he’ll likely howl and chew the house down, so you’d better be the very active type with plenty of time to spare for a crossbreed like that. Where are you planning on finding such a cross? Have you seen one at a rescue centre? Be very careful with private litters and backyard breeders—there’s a lot of illegal stuff out there. Many won’t have a proper breeder’s licence, there’s no guarantee of the parents' welfare, and they often charge a premium even when the puppy hasn't been microchipped or vaccinated, and the socialisation is often poorly handled... I don't know much about Dalmatians, so it’s worth checking a breed profile, but is your friend really going to have enough time for a puppy with a baby on the way?

How can I put it... You know the typical ‘faults’ of a Beagle – well, I say faults, but we only really call them that because of domestic life, when actually it’s just normal behaviour for a hunting dog – and the same goes for a Jack Russell. Well, with a crossbreed, you can end up with a bit of a ‘monster’ 😁 – a hunter, an escape artist, zero recall, a bin raider, a killer of chickens and cats, and someone who needs a massive amount of exercise 😁. I’ve definitely forgotten a few; I’ll have to double-check with my neighbours who hunt...
