My 4-month-old puppy keeps tipping over his water bowl

Hi everyone,

As the title suggests, my puppy 'loves' tipping over his water bowl, and then he plays with it (picking it up in his mouth, wandering around with it, and even taking it into his bed).

It's not too bad when I'm there; I just refill it, give him a firm 'NO', and he doesn't do it again. However, he sometimes does it when he's home alone, and then there's nobody there to give him any water...

P.S. He has loads of toys, so I don't really understand why he's doing this :D

P.S. 2: What do you reckon is the best way to get him to stop playing with it?!

Thanks in advance! ^^

I honestly think any kind of bowl will be a lost cause. He just paws all the water out until the house is like a swimming pool, and then he’s got nothing left to drink while I’m out. It’s really no joke – any advice on what to do???

Glass breaks more easily and into smaller pieces than ceramic, which is much thicker and might be more practical for you too 🙂.

Broken ceramic is just as sharp. But when your bowl is the size of a salad bowl and filled right to the brim with water, there’s no way the dog can break it unless he’s some kind of superdog with levitation powers x-) even I have to put a bit of effort into lifting it, so yeah.

Glass is a bit risky; if he knocks it over and it breaks, he could cut himself. If you want a heavy bowl, ceramic ones are a good option.

Stainless steel ones are still quite light even when full! Putting the bowl on a proper stand is a great shout, or I just use a simple glass bowl, like a salad bowl, and it works a treat. It’s heavy, so there’s no risk of a puppy or an adult dog lifting it or knocking it over, and glass keeps the water nice and cool, unlike plastic bowls.

I’ve got that problem too. I had two stainless steel bowls on a stand, and he finds the noise they make hilarious! At the moment, he’s using a hard plastic bowl for his food, and the stainless steel one for water is on the stand but secured down, because otherwise he always finds a way to get it out—or he just lugs the bowl and the stand all over the house. Cleaning up is one thing, but I don’t want him going without water while I’m out.

I think I'll go for that too, thanks :)

Switch to a stainless steel bowl.

No, their bowl isn't stainless steel, I'm not exactly sure what material it is.

The idea of a stand is brilliant, that'll have to wait until next weekend :D

    Thank you :)

Are the bowls just sat on the floor? We’ve got a stand that holds the bowls, so our puppy can’t pull them out. It’s because whenever we put a water bowl out in the garden, he grabs it and drags it off to ‘his den’ (a little hole he’s dug under the hedge to keep cool and, more importantly, to store all his toys... or his loot xD). I reckon if you’re a bit of a DIYer, you could easily make a stand yourself using some wooden planks with two holes for the bowls :)
