My dog won't defend himself

Hi everyone 👋!

I've got a bit of a problem with Max, let me explain:

Max was attacked by a dog at the beach and instead of defending himself, he just bolted! It's really frustrating me because I’d like to teach my dog how to stand up for himself!!!!!! How do I do that??? The last time I was out with a friend and her dog (his name's Fox). At one point, there was a dog and its owner who wanted the dogs to "get to know each other" and the owner's dog started growling at Max. Max (who was off-lead) just ran for it! He did come back later, though. But when the other dog growled at Fox, Fox stood his ground by growling back at the other dog.

I wish my dog would act "dominant" too.

Why doesn't he react when a dog growls at him or attacks him?

Thanks 😊

Well, I’ve now realised it’s actually quite handy to carry a tea towel or a cloth around with you!

Hi everyone! This post is from a while ago but here’s an update!

My dog stands up for himself now (only when he feels threatened or when another dog attacks him and he can't just take it lying down).

This morning we were out on a walk, and a dog came up and grabbed my dog by the neck! I thought my dog was going to start crying and just let it happen, but no! And the other dog ran off! I don't know if I should see this as a good thing or if I should correct my dog, what do you think?

Of course I didn't just stand there; at first I tried to grab my dog by the collar to get him out of there but he was wriggling all over the place 🙄 I grabbed an old tea towel and started waving it around, which I think helped make the other dog leave.

I'm so proud of my dog! 🙂

I was at the local council yesterday for something else and while I was there, I asked about aggressive dogs being off-lead. She confirmed that all dogs in town must be kept on a lead, otherwise the owner is in the wrong. Mind you, I don't have a go at every dog that approaches mine; it’s only the ones that try to attack him as well as being off-lead.

Nonsense comment lol @Hibou'Rriquet. Boasting about walking around with a chain and kicking any dog that comes running over isn't just "insignificant", it's stupid! And dangerous too! But hey, it’s up to you if you want to put yourself in harm's way. Personally, I've known plenty of dogs, including my Dogo Argentino, that would have been triggered by that kind of thing. Mydogs’ approach was much better and just as effective!
First of all, that nasty mutt came over to take mine out, not to be buddies, so yes, I’m protecting my dog and if I have to use my chain, I will. These aren't the first two dogs to give me grief. Eventually, I just get fed up with stupid dogs. And a dog off-lead is an out-of-control dog; if the owners kept their mutts on a lead, nothing would happen. So am I really the problem, if others aren't following the law?

Legally, a dog is only considered to be "roaming" if it is more than 100 metres away from its owner and out of earshot. So, a dog off-lead but close to its owner isn't actually "roaming".

But I agree, when you have a dog that could potentially attack others, you shouldn't be letting it off-lead or failing to put it back on the lead or manage the situation when passing others.

On the other hand, some dogs might react badly to violence, so do be careful.

Insignificant comment lol @Hibou'Rriquet, boasting about walking around with a chain and booting any dog that comes running isn't just 'insignificant', it's stupid! And dangerous too! But anyway, it’s up to you if you want to put yourself at risk. Personally, I’ve known plenty of dogs, including my Dogo Argentino, who would have been triggered by a blow like that. Right, for a start, that nasty mutt came over to go for mine, not to be friendly, so yes, I’m protecting my dog and if I have to use my chain, I will. It’s not the first couple of dogs that have pissed me off. After a while, I just get fed up with stupid dogs. And a dog not on a lead is a dog roaming out of control—if the owners had their mutts on a lead, nothing would happen. So am I really the problem if everyone else is breaking the law?

@Mydogs I’m not sure if a spiked collar would actually trigger a fight; it’s not really the same thing as hitting out directly. But even without spikes, a good wide leather collar can protect a dog's neck. If it gives the owner some peace of mind, then why not? It seems pretty pointless to me though, except maybe for a tiny dog, but then it’d just look like a neck brace on them 😂 A truly determined dog will just latch on next to the collar anyway. It could even end up being worse, because instead of grabbing the loose scruff of the neck, they might get a proper grip on the back of the neck instead. I think the best thing to do is what you did—just shout at the other dog to scare it off. Fortunately, dogs that charge in with the actual intent to kill are pretty rare.

Trivial comment lol @Hibou'Rriquet. Boasting about walking around with a chain and booting any dog that comes running up isn't trivial, it's just stupid! And dangerous too! But hey, it’s up to you if you want to put yourself at risk. Personally, I’ve known plenty of dogs, including my Dogo, that would have been triggered by that kind of kick. Mydogs' approach was much better and just as effective! I've just seen what a spiked collar looks like and I reckon any dog that tries to bite it is going to get a nasty shock to its teeth!! And it could definitely trigger a fight (in my opinion).

Hi @Mydogs, mine got attacked by an old ***** in front of a garage right on the street this weekend. I gave her a whack with the lead to make her leave him alone and she let go. He defended himself but didn't manage to get a hold of that nasty dog—shame, she would've deserved it, sorry to say. And the owner didn't even apologise, she just stood there smiling at me... Since then, I've been using a studded collar (not spiked, I should clarify); if some stupid dog tries to grab him by the neck, it'll wreck its teeth. Then this afternoon, another attack from an old ***** again! She went full pelt at mine. The bloke was calling his mutt back but it didn't give a toss what its owner was saying. I grabbed my iron chain and she got a smack; she yelped and ran off with her owner chasing after her lol. For this attack, my dog didn't have to defend himself because I sorted it out quickly. I used to just have the idiots to deal with, but now I've got their dogs to put up with too—I'm fed up with this town. Thank God for my chain; no one's attacking my dog again without getting a whack. Whatever... Pointless comment

    It’s like this:

Mine doesn’t have quite as many spikes, but at least it means there’s no way for anything to get a grip on his neck. You might find them in a pet shop, but I just got mine from Amazon.
