Ideas to stop her chewing her bandage

Hi everyone,

It’s been a while since I’ve been on this forum, but I really need to pick your brains.

Mila, my German Shepherd who's nearly 3, cut her front right paw open last week. The result: 7 stitches and a big bandage.

Since I was fairly sure she’d try to mess with the dressing, I immediately bought a fabric cone (the vet forgot to give us one) to make it a bit more comfortable for her.

The problem is that despite the cone, she still manages to scratch at it and tear bits of the bandage off, especially just after it's been changed. I can't watch her 24/7 and the only "solution" I’ve found (which I’m not really happy with) is putting a basket muzzle on her for part of the afternoon.

Does anyone have any ideas to stop her from damaging the dressing? I’ve thought about maybe getting a standard plastic Elizabethan collar, but it would be really uncomfortable for her.

Right, I’ve just given tea tree oil a go. She’s not really a fan of the smell haha, let's see if it puts her off :)

    Thanks for your reply!

The tea tree oil idea is a good one, I’ll give it a go. I’ve also got some peppermint; I know she’s not a fan, but I’ll have to see if it’s enough to put her off chewing her bandage. Worth a try ;)

I did consider a BiteNot collar, but as it’s her front paw, I reckon she’ll still manage to reach it when she lies down :/

Hi, you could try putting a few drops of tea tree oil on the bandage or a sock... I reckon that’ll put them off... and maybe ask if a BiteNot collar might help? It works for the belly, but I’m not sure about the legs?? It’s a tricky one.
