Soft palate surgery (BOAS)

Hi everyone,

My Frenchie, Poxy, had surgery on his soft palate and nostrils yesterday.

It’s been a restless night and I’ve barely slept. He was struggling to breathe and having trouble swallowing his food (his usual dry food, but soaked and blended), and his urine was dark brown, almost red.

He’s looking a bit perkier this morning, though not 100%. He took his meds but hasn’t eaten anything; he managed to swallow the rest of yesterday's meal, but this time his wee looked normal. I should also mention he isn't drinking and hasn't done a poo yet.

He’s trying to sleep while standing up, and just as he’s about to fall over, he startles awake.

Reading other threads about soft palate operations, it seems like other dogs were fine afterwards, whereas mine seems really unsettled, miserable, etc...

I’d like to know if anyone else has been in the same boat, or if things went well for you. I’m so worried about my little fur baby.

Thanks for your replies, I was really worried. He’d only just had his operation, so that explains it. He’s doing better now; he’s still being sick, but other than that, everything’s back to normal.

You should definitely call the vet anyway. I had my little American Cocker Spaniel operated on for her soft palate and tonsils, but not her nostrils. The surgery was really tough on her. Bloody couldn't swallow anything for about 72 hours. I gave her plenty of ice, though. Her meds were given via injections at the vet's. But it’s a good sign that he’s taking his meds now. It just takes time.

Yes, the best thing to do is give the vet who operated on your dog a call; it's all part of the post-op follow-up, so it's perfectly normal.

Your vet will be better placed to tell you if things are looking normal or if there’s cause for concern. They deal with this sort of thing all the time.

Give your vet a ring to see what they think. Mind you, it only happened yesterday, and I imagine it wasn't exactly a small op – some dogs can take a bit of time to bounce back.
