My Freud often does this thing where he relieves himself inside the house the second we've got back from a walk. Is this normal?

My 3-month-old puppy keeps having accidents indoors right after we've come back from a walk. What should I do? Thanks.

    Hi there,

If your dog was house-trained but has started having accidents again, the first thing to do is check with the vet to make sure there isn’t an underlying health issue.

If everything is fine, then you need to go back to basics with their toilet training.

Don't scold him when you get home; just ignore it. Put him in the garden (or a separate room) and only clean up the "present" when he's out of sight (seeing you on all fours with a cloth could be mistaken for a game, which might encourage your pup to go indoors again).

When he goes outside, give him plenty of praise. If you scold him when you discover he's had an accident indoors, your puppy won't make the connection and won't understand why you're cross.

During walks, try to avoid heading back home immediately after he's done his business. He might see it as a punishment—"as soon as I go, we go back in, so I'll hold it in"—and as a result, you'll find a little surprise waiting for you when you get back home ;) :)

    Best regards,

    Christophe Leluc

Yes, definitely. She pees inside even though she’s not allowed to, so we give her a telling-off and put her in her crate for five minutes. She goes in all by herself and hangs her head as if to say, "Go on then, shut the door". And three seconds later, that’s it, she’s finished her time-out and wants to come back out! :-)

She's punishing herself!! Now that's something I’d have loved to see!! Must be quite a sight!! ^^

With my lot, I 'speak dog'!! I use the same language they do!! ^^

At the end of the day, as long as there’s plenty of love and the animal is well looked after, to each their own!! ^^

Yes Tallula. It worked for my dog and my in-laws' dog as well. It might depend on the dog, but mine self-corrects now.

My Rocky, who’s six months old, was doing the exact same thing to me only two months ago. I’d take him for long walks and then—poof!—the second we got back in, he’d have a massive pee, and right in front of me too! Don’t be afraid to give him a proper telling off; that’s what I did, along with a little smack on the bum to show him I wasn’t happy. And now, well, everything’s fine—no more accidents in the house!

That’s exactly the point, @Jfk07, that’s where you’re going wrong! It’s the fact that you’re comparing a dog to a child. A dog is a dog, and if you tell him off when you get home because he’s had an accident while you were out, he’ll certainly look like he knows he’s being scolded, but that’s simply because he can see you’re angry. He doesn’t make the connection with the mess he’s made at all; he only connects it with the fact that you’re cross when you walk through the door. The things the vet told you were common advice back then, but now other "studies" (I meant to use a different word but my brain’s gone blank) have proved that it’s completely pointless. At the end of the day, you’ve got your opinion and I’ve got mine, and I respect that. It’s a good job we don’t all have to agree! ^^

Yes! Watch out for the common myths about our pooches! Sadly, don't always go believing what inexperienced dog owners tell you!
