Stopping the neighbour's dog from barking

Hi, I’m looking for a way to quieten my neighbour’s dog who barks non-stop, and the owners couldn’t care less...

I’m considering investing in an ultrasonic whistle, but several sources have told me they aren’t particularly effective.

So, is there any way to stop a dog that barks at the drop of a hat??

Cheers

Hi, If the dog is outside, you could just nip over while the neighbours are out and put a muzzle on him; that’ll certainly send them a message. Or you could just get the RSPCA involved.

Evening, If you can get near the dog, it’s him you need to win over. I had this same problem and whenever I walked past the dog, I’d talk to him and leave a bit of cheese, some meat, or a treat nearby. After a few days we were thick as thieves, and then I was able to get him to settle down. Might be worth a try!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, I completely get it... I've got a neighbour with dogs that can yap away non-stop without anyone seeming to mind. It's really annoying, especially as the owners seem to think it’s perfectly normal when they’re like that. It’s almost as if you’re unlucky enough to complain, it’s somehow your fault! 🤪

Mind you, I suppose the "downside" of having a dog is that, unlike a cat, they’re noisier, so you have to keep in mind that you aren't the only one living there and it might bother the neighbours... During the day it's a nuisance when it drags on, but it isn't "the end of the world". At night, though, it’s a whole different story.

As for the whistle, I’d say check some reviews to see if it’s been successful for others and then give it a go. I don't reckon they cost much, and if it works, then great... though I’m worried that sort of thing might just get the dog even more worked up than anything else ^^. That, or try to see if any other neighbours are annoyed; maybe as a first step, a few of you could have a word with those people, and if that doesn't work, take it higher up...

Other than that, I’m not really sure what else you can do. And even then, I'm afraid that making a formal complaint might not actually lead to much.

Kill the dog? Or the neighbours... LOL! Sorry, I just really wanted to say something completely off-topic ^^

If we had to move house every time we were bothered by a pet or their owners, we’d never get our bags unpacked. I’ve got the same issue with a neighbour who has dogs and cats she couldn't care less about, and the meowing and yapping at all hours of the day and night is a real nightmare. I know my boyfriend tried using those ultrasonic noise devices (you can get them online, not an actual whistle), but the dogs just carried on regardless. Maybe a whistle would be more effective. Then again, I suppose it depends on the dog—it works for some and not for others... What kind of place do you live in? If you have a caretaker or a landlord, try having a word with them. It’s still a noise nuisance, so they might be able to do something about it. Otherwise, if you say they’re practically untouchable and talking to them doesn’t achieve much... see if any other neighbours are bothered as well and try getting a petition together. When several people are complaining, it carries much more weight than if you’re the only one.

The police couldn't care less because my neighbours have 'special circumstances' and, as a result, they’re basically untouchable, or near enough. And yeah, my reply is 'pleasant' because the first post is just completely off-topic. If I wanted advice on neighbour disputes, I wouldn't have come here...

Hi, Thanks for that completely irrelevant reply. It's true that after two years of this nightmare, the idea of talking to them never even crossed my mind. I've just had a word and, lo and behold, a miracle! It worked! But seriously, I’m on very bad terms with my neighbours due to several noise nuisances on their part, and they have no intention of even trying to be any quieter. Threatening to report them does absolutely nothing because I’ve already tried that. I can’t cope with the dog barking day and night anymore (and the owners shouting their heads off all day to get it to shut up... which just adds to the racket). So, do ultrasonic devices actually work?

Leave a note on the neighbour's letterbox saying you're going to make a formal complaint; maybe that'll get a reaction?
