Hi, I’m looking for a way to quieten my neighbour’s dog who barks non-stop, and the owners couldn’t care less...
I’m considering investing in an ultrasonic whistle, but several sources have told me they aren’t particularly effective.
So, is there any way to stop a dog that barks at the drop of a hat??
Cheers

Good evening, I live in a detached house and the neighbours have had a dog for a few years now. My life has become a living hell. I’ve tried talking to them, the council, and the local police; they do get back to me, but nothing effective is ever done. As for the neighbours, they just don't want any trouble. I’m at the end of my tether. It’s not the dog I’d lock up, it’s the owners. That Shepherd is stuck outside all the time.

This might sound a bit daft, but why not try using a standard whistle? It might not bother the dogs that much, but after a while it might get on the neighbours' nerves enough that they finally decide to step in. (Obviously, if there are other neighbours nearby, it's likely to bother them as well).
As for the RSPCA, while the dog might not be 'mistreated' in the strict sense of the word, that doesn't mean they won't intervene. Near my place, there was a dog that was left all alone constantly (as in, there wasn't even a house on the land). He was there day and night, by himself, just barking at flies. The owner only turned up once in a blue moon to mow the grass and presumably give him some food. My neighbour even left a blanket out for him when it was cold. In the end, I reported it to a colleague who volunteers at the RSPCA. I’m not sure exactly what action they took (whether they gave the owner a warning or came to collect the dog), but either way, he’s not there anymore and we’re sleeping a heck of a lot better at night...
I couldn't agree more! But what can you do when there's no way to sort things out?
Personally, people bother me way more than dogs do. I live on a housing estate and there’s quite a bit of barking going on around me; I don’t even notice it anymore, but some of my neighbours are much more of a nightmare (and you can't exactly win them over with a treat!).
Anyway, let's have a bit of a laugh!!! And keep looking for solutions.
Unless you’ve got an agreement with the neighbour. Because it’s true that people often give things to other people’s dogs, especially kids – things like sweets and chocolate – even though it’s really bad for them.
I'm not saying you're wrong!! I'm just saying that, for whatever reason, you shouldn't feed a dog that isn't yours!! At the end of the day, the owner of the dog in question is in the wrong!! No doubt about that! But let's say someone sees you feeding the neighbour's dog and, by pure coincidence, that same dog falls ill—you could be accused of poisoning it!!
Anyway, I agree that our pets shouldn't be a nuisance to others... but nothing gives you the right to feed a dog that isn't yours!!
If the neighbours won’t accept the olive branch, then they should do something to stop the nuisance.
We love our pets, but we shouldn’t expect our neighbours to have to put up with them.
Often, dogs that bark are left alone most of the time and are just bored. Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t realise this. As I’ve heard people say before, 'after all, it’s only a dog!', which just goes to show that not everyone is cut out for life with a so-called 'companion' animal. It’s not just us who need company; our pets do too.
I'm not trying to be rude... but if I caught someone feeding my dog just to win him over, they’d get a proper earful!!! For a start, you should never feed a dog that isn't yours! You have no way of knowing if they have any intolerances or allergies. My dog is raw-fed... a simple bit of bread or even a bog-standard dog biscuit and he ends up with diarrhoea!! So, personally, I wouldn't stand for a neighbour taking it upon themselves to feed my dog!!
