Neutered dog mating?

Hi everyone,

I need some help with a particular issue. I have two small dogs, a male and a female. The male was neutered at a local rescue centre last year and we’ve had him for a year now.

For the past two days, the male has been mating with the female (three times in two days). I’ve heard that this can happen, but I was wondering if it’s normal for it to be this frequent.

Can anyone shed some light on this??

Thanks in advance!

Hi, yes it’s perfectly normal if he was neutered after 7 or 8 months. If the neutering was done properly, you’ve got nothing to worry about – no puppies! However, they can still get "stuck" (tied) after mating.

A male might mount another male, or a female might mount another female or a male; in those cases, it’s just a dominance thing, so there’s definitely no risk of puppies there either lol 😁

"The tie is caused by the ***** violently contracting her uterus to prevent the semen from falling straight to the ground due to the mating position, and not by the male." It's the vaginal muscles that contract, not the uterus... not exactly the same place! =)

The tie is caused by the ***** strongly contracting her uterus to stop the sperm from just falling straight out because of the mating position, rather than being caused by the male. The vagina contracts during the male's full erection... It’s all linked, really (and the dogs are too, literally, during this phase lol)

Hi, I think it’s brilliant for your dogs’ balance.

I actually reckon it goes even further than that.

It’s already quite telling within a group of dogs, but in a pack, social status and their position in the hierarchy are definitely at stake. The act of mating is how each dog knows their place.

So, mounting with a neutered male then, @Tania?

As for whether it's good or bad, I’m with @Tania and @Turdus :-)

I think it’s neither, just pure instinct. (Mind you, the female probably feels a bit better/less 'on edge' afterwards anyway)

Just for a laugh, I recently had to explain to a mate at a party that cats don't mate for pleasure LOL

He’d obviously missed the memo about the little barbs on the penis ^^

The side where there isn't a tie... I've seen the "locking" case before. Lorna

Oops, my "maybe" was meant for the comment before yours

Hi there, It’s actually quite common for neutered males to mate with pregnant bitches. It doesn't really do anything for either of them; mating is driven by instinct rather than pleasure (as far as I know, at least two species mate for reasons other than just procreation – humans and bonobos – and there are likely others, but with dogs, the act is purely triggered by the female's condition). The way some people anthropomorphise animals really baffles me. So... nothing out of the ordinary, and nothing particularly positive or negative about it. As @Tania28700 mentioned, in the event of a shock or a violent twist, the penis bone can fracture (though this is extremely rare). There are also STIs (yep, dogs have that much in common with us! 😁), but your dogs would have to be 'getting it on' all over the place (just a joke, I should point out!) and one of them would already have to be a carrier...
