Hi everyone, I’ve got a bit of a problem. I got a puppy a few days ago and he’s settled into the house quite well.

But since then, my older dog can’t even walk around without the little puppy biting him – he can’t even eat in peace :(

Please help, the poor thing can’t do anything at all!! I really hope someone has some advice, thanks so much!!! 🙂

Best regards, Rocknine

Thanks a lot, I'll give it a go. My Yorkie obeys really well but my Staffie is struggling a bit; she's very stubborn lol. Have a good evening.

My problem is that my Yorkie won't stand for it with my young Staffy, and I’m scared that one day they’ll have a proper fight. She just wants to play, she’s only nearly 5 months old. The more I try to stop her, the more she goes at him, so I'm forced to separate them. Females rarely fight but your Yorkie clearly doesn’t want to play :/ My puppy is always all over my older dog, he gets no peace at all. My older one nips him but he just goes right back for more, there’s nothing you can do. You’ve just got to be patient, and in the meantime, try teaching her some commands—I’m teaching my little one to jump ;) Have a good rest of your day.

I'm having this problem between my old boy and my Cairn puppy.

Well, the old lad does his best to growl at him, but my 4-month-old puppy couldn't care less.

When I tell him "no", he stops and just finds a new target.

I’m having the same problem. My female Staffy, who’s nearly 5 months old, only wants to play with my little 7-year-old Yorkie, but because of her size, she’s hurting him.

    Hi there,

the dog will eventually decide to put the puppy in its place. For now, just let them handle it.

    I completely agree with that.

That said, not all dogs are cut out to be "mentors", and not all puppies have necessarily picked up all the social skills they need during their primary socialisation. This is why you shouldn't get a puppy too early.

But anyway, the older dog shouldn't let itself be bullied if it feels things are going too far. And that will all be part of the puppy’s learning process.

I know plenty of dogs with the patience of a saint, but none of them are gluttons for punishment! ;)

Thanks for the advice, but the problem is that even on walks the leads get all tangled up and everything. He looks up to him like a big brother, but I’m going to try and teach him the command. Thanks a lot :) !

Véro’s right, the dog will eventually decide to put the puppy in his place. Generally, it's best to just let them sort it out.

Your older dog really needs to put him in his place! He’ll probably do just that once he’s truly had enough!

Start teaching your puppy the "leave it" command right away; if he doesn't listen, make a noise to startle him so he stops pestering the other one.
