My dog has swallowed a piece of a foam ball, roughly 3cm long and 1cm wide. For context, he's a Staffy weighing around 22 lbs (about 1.5 stone). Has anyone else ever been in this situation? What should I do?

I’m not stopping anyone from having foam balls for dinner 🙄 lol, but if a dog gulps one down, even if it doesn't swell up, you could still be looking at serious trouble, even a bowel blockage...

Like @Kikaah said, there’s no need to get into a debate about which type of foam absorbs how much liquid or what percentage it expands by, and certainly no need to cite Tintin as a scientific source XD to back up a pointless argument. At the end of the day, it's not a small thing; it's not natural, digestible food, and it’s only right not to take it lightly...

If all goes well and it comes out the other end (almost XD) looking the same as it did going in, then great. But in these situations, you’ve still got to keep a close eye on them anyway because things can go wrong, especially depending on the size of the bit of foam swallowed. It’s better to be ready to get to the vet in time if needed.

It's a shame the OP isn't active on here anymore, so we won’t find out if the ball passed through safely in the end, but I really hope so for the greedy pup. 😔

At the end of the day, it stands to reason that swallowing something non-edible is going to cause a bit of worry... we don’t need to write a thesis on whether a bit of foam might swell up or not!

Yes, foam is dangerous. No, the dog won’t necessarily end up with a blockage, but if in doubt, you've just got to keep a close eye on them.

That reminds me of a story; I’ll share it in the anecdotes thread, you’ll have a good laugh! ^^

I’ve been doing a bit of digging online; it can actually be quite dangerous for dogs. It really can swell up and cause a bowel blockage. So Tintin had better behave himself! 🙄

Well, my vet must be reading Tintin then 😔

I’d be a bit more wary even though it’s foam. It can swell up. What a shame, we won’t get to find out what happened next...

I don’t think all this optimism is necessarily appropriate for a situation involving a bowel obstruction. For instance, I had a Cocker who chewed up some plastic rollers and had to have emergency surgery in the middle of the night to have a section of his bowel removed.

    Hi there,

My dog swallowed a sponge; we took him to the vet and it passed naturally without any specific treatment.

    Kind regards

Keep a close eye on him; if he’s sick or seems constipated, take him to the vet. Give him a tablespoon of oil to help things move along.

It’ll probably come out one end or the other! :)
