My dog is trying to mount me

Hi everyone,

I’m wondering about my dog’s behaviour. For a week now, he’s started trying to sniff my crotch, and every time he manages it, he tries to hump my arm or my leg. At least, that’s how my husband sees it; I think he just wants me to pick him up (a bad habit I’ve started ^^"). However, he wasn’t doing this last week. It happens every single time: he sniffs and then tries to climb up. Just so you know, we’re currently trying for a baby.

What do you all think? Do you think there’s a connection? What should I do?

    Thanks for your replies :)

Kikaah: oh no, I’m not suggesting that my dog is trying to dominate me, but his behaviour was puzzling me.

After two or three "nos", he stopped doing it, so... it looks like that worked, although it's probably too early to say for certain.

We really need to stop believing the myth that dogs are constantly trying to dominate humans...

    Hi Hanamineko,

Dogs are very sensitive to changes in scent, especially those caused by a woman’s hormonal cycle.

In some dogs, you might notice changes in behaviour, some more significant than others, during periods or ovulation. This can also happen just after sex or during pregnancy.

Because of all this, some dogs can even develop a bit of an obsession with underwear.

Now, a dog humping isn’t always down to sexual stimulation. That’s why neutering only significantly reduces humping in about a third of dogs.

In fact, most humping is caused by overexcitement, attention-seeking, wanting to play, or as a way to relieve stress and anxiety.

However, it’s definitely not about trying to dominate humans.

As for what you should do, not much really.

Don't let him do it, but there's no need to tell him off or threaten him. He isn't being "naughty" here; he's just responding to a biological urge.

Actually, you should start by not letting him sniff your crotch anymore—just move him away and ignore him as soon as he starts. If he persists, try to redirect him to another activity he finds rewarding... UNLESS he's only doing it to get your attention. In that case, it would be counter-productive, and it’s better to give him a firm "no" in a deep, steady voice, without getting annoyed or shouting. Think of this "no" as a human version of a growl.

Hi there, Just to answer your question specifically, I had the exact same issue with a friend’s dog I used to look after sometimes. I was on hormone treatment at the time. I regularly had to leave him in a room on his own, otherwise he’d try to dominate me or mount me just like yours is doing. It stopped as soon as I finished the treatment.
