Today my dog had to have one of his dewclaws removed because he’d nearly ripped it off after getting caught in some bushes. The vet said there wasn’t anything specific to do other than disinfecting it with some antiseptic spray. He suggested a 'paw soak', but that’s just impossible as my dog won't let me do it. So, I’ve tried spraying it directly onto the wound, but he licks it off straight after I apply it.
This might be a silly question, but is there any risk for him? Is it toxic at all?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

You could also try Cothivet; it’s a vet product made from mother tinctures and essential oils.
I always keep a bottle of it at home, it’s really brilliant stuff:
- The smell is a great deterrent for dogs that might try to lick at their wounds.
- It’s not just an antiseptic, it actually helps with the healing process too.
- The spray bottle is super handy for all sorts of cuts and scrapes, and it doesn’t break the bank.
I don't have a cone for him because he's never needed one before.
Would Betadine be less "harmful" for him?
I'm going to try a paw soak with the Betadine scrub (the red one), otherwise I'll try using some soaked gauze pads—I hadn't thought of that.
Thanks for your replies and for the tips!
Soak a few gauze pads in some antiseptic liquid and apply them. Wrap some cling film around it a few times, but not too tightly. It’s a handy little trick that works wonders and replaces the need for a bath. Just as effective!
To do a paw soak, put your solution in a tall glass (or a small saucepan), place it on the floor, and then put their paw in it; they’re usually quite good about letting you do it.
You might want to consider having them wear a cone for a few days until it heals up.
Hi there!
I don’t think it’s harmful in small doses, but I reckon the best way to avoid any trouble (especially as he could re-injure himself or pull out any stitches by licking) would be to put a cone on him... Let's be honest, it's not nice for them at all. When it starts healing, it’ll get itchy and he’ll lick even more, or even start nibbling the wound...
Regarding the antiseptic spray, it contains alcohol so it’s not ideal; even if it’s probably not enough to really harm your pup, I’d suggest using Betadine instead... Or even better, you can get disinfectant sprays specifically for dogs from a pet shop or the vet!
