As the title suggests, I’m looking into the Husky/Samoyed crossbreed.
Over the last few months, I’ve been seeing loads of adverts for this mix, with puppies being sold at the same prices as KC-registered pedigree dogs. Of course, the photos are always adorable, but puppies always are when they're small, aren't they?
So, I was wondering:
- What do they look like as adults? (If you have any photos, I’d love to see them!)
- What’s their temperament like? (Even though every dog is unique, there must be some common traits.)
- Considering the risks of PRA, corneal dystrophy, and cataracts in Huskies, and hip dysplasia in Samoyeds, what’s the health outlook for these dogs?
The adverts are for puppies sold by 'pros' (well, registered as such on the site, anyway).
If any owners of this crossbreed are on this thread, please feel free to introduce your fur babies!

There are show-type Huskies, which are bred primarily for their looks and are very common at shows.
And then there are the Huskies you’re talking about, bred first and foremost for performance rather than looks; these working lines are called Polar Speed (I think there are other lines as well, but I’m not 100% sure). These lines aren't seen much at shows and aren't very popular with the judges :(
That being said, at home, Samoyeds are calm and very affectionate. They absolutely love people and other dogs.
Maybe a crossbreed makes a husky more sociable and less independent.
Between a husky and a Sammie, there’s no contest – the Samoyed is much easier to live with (though obviously it depends on the individual dog, blah blah blah...). I don’t see why you'd bother crossing one with a husky, unless it's just to get blue eyes and less fur. If people want a "more manageable" husky, then they're just not cut out for the breed, simple as that.
It’s going to end up just like the Eurasier. Samoyeds are dogs that are becoming victims of their own looks; you see them more and more in those cute dog videos, and because they have that smiling teddy-bear face and always seem so friendly, people just don’t see past that.
At the last pet show in Paris, I overheard a Samoyed breeder telling some very keen customers: "they make perfect family pets and only need an hour’s walk on the lead every day." I tried to talk the young couple out of it when I bumped into them further down the aisles, but my words didn't mean a thing to them—they completely fell for the breeder's sales pitch!
I just don't get how people can think about buying or adopting without doing even a bit of basic research before visiting breeders.
It never ceases to amaze me what some "pros" are willing to do for the money... no wonder there are so many dogs in rescue centres, between future owners who can't be bothered to do their homework and people selling high-energy breeds as if they were Chihuahuas...
@Kikaah I know, given my current situation there’s no way I’d be able to handle a dog like that anyway.

Hi, it's a cross between two Nordic breeds from what used to be known as Lapland. I've seen a few near the Russian border and the ones I came across looked just like their mums. They're used in sled teams and share the same traits: they need to live in a pack, have bags of energy, and can be "tricky" dogs if you don't know the breed.
I can understand that in a sledding context, but the "breeders" I've spotted are selling them as pets :/ So is it just for the look? A bit of a fad?
The things they'll do to sell their puppies!
As I said in another post, not long ago there was an ad on a pet site for a husky breeder, describing them as "little companion dogs" (those were the exact words used!). These unscrupulous breeders deserve to be thrown to the wolves!
The only Samoyed I’ve ever seen was out on a 2-hour walk with my Boxer, so they were playing the whole time... his owner told us it was just a warm-up for him 😂
