How to tell if a dog has been neutered

Hi everyone,

I’ve got what’s probably a bit of a silly question, but I was wondering how you can tell if your dog has been neutered? I’ve recently adopted a senior dog and to me it seemed obvious that he hadn’t been done. But the other day, I bumped into a neighbour while out on a walk who asked if he was neutered; I said no, feeling quite sure of myself, but he had a look underneath and seemed really sceptical... I think you’re supposed to look at the testicles, but how can you tell for sure (without asking a vet, of course, otherwise I wouldn't be asking on here)? Thanks!

My Shih Tzu is neutered and yet he still has his testicles. You'll need to check if they're empty.

Bit of a strange rescue, but at least they're saving dogs. Mind you, never seeing a vet really isn't good enough...

Good evening, thanks for your replies. I adopted Jador from a rescue, but not the RSPCA or anything funded; it was set up by some kind local souls right out in the sticks... Since they don't have the means, the dogs aren't neutered unless they’d already been done in the past... The dogs only see a vet in an emergency... mine didn't see one once in the four years he spent in a kennel. I know it’s not exactly ideal, but since I’d wanted to volunteer at a rescue near me, I ended up getting attached to this old boy, even if the conditions are far from perfect... Anyway, I can see the outline of his 'bits' on his bum but they seem empty, I'll have a feel when he comes back in from the garden... lol

I think the point of a vasectomy is that it’s reversible, isn’t it? The implant also makes the testicles shrink. I’m not sure if that’s the case for every dog, though.

If you adopted them from the RSPCA, it’s usually a mandatory procedure. Have you double-checked your adoption contract and/or their pet health record?

Just a heads up, a dog can have his "bits" emptied but they’ll still be visible – that’s a vasectomy:

    – which involves tying or cutting the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm from the testicles to the prostate).

While this procedure makes the dog sterile (as his semen won’t contain any sperm anymore), it doesn’t change the fact that his hormones will still be fully active.

That's partly why I said 'If you're not sure just by looking...'. Of course, if it's clearly visible, there's no need to go feeling it.

Mine had tiny little testicles; it looked like there was nothing but skin (and nothing inside!). He was a hound, just a tiny bit larger than a beagle. You could clearly see it, you didn't even need to touch.

Right, I might have an answer for you, but you’re going to have to put your dignity to one side XD

If you can’t tell just by looking whether your dog has been neutered, well... you’ll have to "have a feel". If you can feel two balls, he’s still entire; if you can only feel skin, then they’re gone.

Yeah, you'll have to check if he's got testicles 😁
